Ray Parent
Strong Finish
Ray Parent headed into the final American Canadian Tour points event just looking for a positive outcome. The Tiverton, RI based Team has been plagued by bad luck in what seems like every week since the mid-point of the 2013 racing season.
The Fall Foliage 200 at Airborne International Speedway was site of 14th point’s event on the ACT calendar. Parent who carried a plus-three from his qualifying race started the 200-lap event in the fourth position.
Settling in amongst the top-five, Parent would battle from third to sixth for first half of the event. As the competition caution waved on lap-130 Parent was fifth. Fighting through heavy lapped traffic as the race wound down, apparent contact with a lapped car would bring handling issues to the 17RI.
“The lapped traffic was brutal today; it just would not end,” stated Parent. “Other than the first 25-laps I don’t think there was a lap that we were not in traffic... I’m not sure who it was but we made heavy contact with the front end while trying to get through it and it caused the toe to be out almost ¾” of an inch."
Battling a tight handling condition Parent would bring the Amtrol Ford Fusion home in the 7th overall position. A finish he and the Team were proud of. “I’d say that we had some luck today for sure,” stated Parent. “We finished first of all… There isn’t a mark on the car. We had a 5th place car today and even with the front-end problem we came home with a 7th. I’m really happy. The guys did a great job… It was a good end of the season.”
The top-ten finish would earn Parent a 7th place in ACT series points. Something the he is satisfied with after missing two events during the year. “We were the highest finisher in points of the people that didn't attend all 14-races,” stated Parent. “Realistically we would have come home fourth or fifth if we had run those two races. So I’m happy with the 7th."
Parent felt that their biggest accomplishment of the year even with the bad luck was how strong they ran.
“The thing I’m most proud of is how much we improved as a Team. We were fast every week. Even when we struggled we were a top-10 car. That’s what I take from this year. The effort these guys put-in really showed on the track," stated Parent.
As the Northeast racing reason comes to a close Parent and his Amtrol Team will look to limited special events like the Thompson Speedways World Series of Racing to close out the year.
But first this coming weekend he will get behind the wheel of the Carquest sponsored Gifford Motorsports 18 late model for the DAV Fall Classic. A 50-lap late model special at Seakonk Speedway in Seakonk, MA.
"We are excited to run the 18 car. Seakonk is our home track. There is no pressure for us... we will just go out and have some fun."
