The biggest race on the 2013 American Canadian Tour schedule brought Ray Parent and the Amtrol Ford Fusion Team to the Champlain Valley of upstate New York. The $140,000+ International 500 at Airborne Raceway was all about money and prestige as the none-points event drew 49 entrants. Parent looked to continue his streak of top 5’s at the Plattsburgh, NY ½ mile oval.

In a “Milk Bowl” style segment race, the racers received the same amount of points as their finishing position from the each of the three 100 lap segments. The driver with the lowest point total would take home a minimum of $25,000.

With the ACT passing points system lining up the first 100 lap event, the all-important draw for heat race starting positions didn’t go as the team had planned. Parent’s father Rene would draw the second highest number from the bag.

That draw sent the 17RI machine to the 11th starting position of heat #4. “At first I wasn’t overly happy with my father for that draw, Parent laughed. But it really set the tone for the whole day.

Parent used that starting spot to gain 7 positions in his heat race; earning himself the $1000 VP Race Fuels Pole award for the first 100 lap segment.

Leading 6 of the first 15 laps in a hard-nosed side by side battle with eventually winner Joey Pole; Parent earned $600 in lap money in the process. He would go on to finish 5th in the first segment.

The second 100 lap segment would start Parent from the 29th position. Fighting the handling on the Amtrol, Carlin machine he would pit for adjustments and eventually work his way to 12th finishing position.

The third and final segment Parent fought his way from a mid-pack starting position to 6th place finish; earning a total of 23 points and a 6th place finish in the overall run down.

“It was hard day, but a good one Parent stated. You are fighting for everything you can in a race like this. We didn't have a car that could run with Joey [Pole] or Brian [Hoar] but i think we had a top 5 car. We lead some laps, sat on the pole, missed a top-5 by 1 point and made some money… Overall I'm very pleased. I’m proud of my guys for working hard all weekend; it was a long one but they did great, Parent finished.

The American Canadian Tour gets back to points racing this weekend as they head back up north for round #9 at Devils Bowl Speedway in West Haven, VT. The event will be the second trip to the ½ mile oval this year, as Parent scored a 5th place finish back in April.
