Forbes Shines Bright: Triumphs in Thrilling Modified Feature at Can Am
Mother Nature was not a factor at the Can-Am Speedway this past Friday night. Drivers in all five classes were happy to be back, along with a grandstand full of excited race fans.
After a win the last time we raced on June 21st, Genavieve Bartlett was out front of the Donath Motorworx Limited Sportsman 12 lap feature, with Camdin Cook and Logan Brown right there to challenge. Bartlett was strong on this night using the bottom lane, but Brown had other ideas. On lap 9 Bartlett slipped up off turn 3 and 4 allowing Brown to get by for the lead. From there Logan Brown would march on to his sixth win of the season over Camdin Cook, Genavieve Bartlett, Gage Howard and Brianna Murtaugh.
Tucker Donath was the early pace setter at the start of the Panther Frameworx Crate Sprint Cars leading the way over Andrew Hennessy and Josh Verne Jr. Donath pulled away and appeared to be headed for his third win of the season, but Hennessy was able to adjust his driving style and run down the leader. On lap 9 Hennessy closed in as Josh Verne Jr. also tried to keep pace. On lap 11 Hennessy made the pass for the lead and started to drive away. Andrew Hennessy would survive a late race restart on lap 17 and hold off Josh Verne Jr. to score his 4th win of the season. Verne crossed in second ahead of Tucker Donath Cam McKinnon and George Sanford.
Cameron Black was looking for something good to happen in the Whitesboro Plowshop DIRTCar 358 Modified division. Black led the 25 lap race early with Scott Webb and Preston Forbes right there with him. As the race approached the halfway point Forbes began to move in to challenge Black for the lead while Tim Fuller came from 12th to challenge the top two drivers. On lap 14 Preston Forbes took the top spot away on the high lane off turn two, while Fuller used the same line in turn four to take second. Over the final laps Tim Fuller gave Preston Forbes all he could handle, but on this night, it was Preston Forbes holding on for his first win of the season with Fuller crossing in 2nd. Cameron Black crossed in third, his best finish of the year, while Derek Webb and Billy Dunn completed the top 5.
Taylor Doxtator was the early leader in the 20 lap Bob Johnson Auto Group DIRTCar Sportsman feature with Trevor Gibbons and Dave Rogers right there with him. Rogers was quick all night long as he took second from Gibbons, however a caution for Steve Roberts on lap 4 bunched up the field for a restart. When the green flew it was Rogers taking over the lead over Doxtator and Gavin Eisele, who was on the move in the early stages of the event. Rogers pulled out to a straightaway lead but Gavin Eisele made his way to second and started to chip away at the lead deficit. As the laps clicked off Gavin Eisele closed the gap but on this night Dave Rogers was able to get to the finish line first and proved to be good timing as his driveshaft broke at the checkered flag. Gavin Eisele, Taylor Doxtator, Eric Nier and Keegan Nier rounded out the top 5.
The final event of the night was the Sundance Leisure Thundercars and this race did not disappoint. Corey Valade took the lead from early pace setter Tony Frezzo, who experienced mechanical issues and dropped out of the race on the back stretch on lap 3. On a restart Valade remained in front but Anthony St. Mary Jr., Justin Pope, Michael Greenfield and Damien Bechler were all in the mix were all fast enough to grab a win. As the laps wound down Valade St. Mary and Pope broke away making it a three car battle for the win. The race slowed on lap 9 for a quick yellow, but gave Justin Pope and Anthony St. Mary Jr. another chance at the lead. On the final restart Corey Valade took the lead and after Anthony St. Mary Jr. dropped off the pace in the closing laps, Valade held off a determined Justin Pope to score his first win of 2024. Pope finished second ahead of Michael Greenfield, Damien Bechler and OJ White.
Next week it’s Vintage Christmas in July as the Eastern Ontario Vintage Stock Car Club makes their only appearance at Can-Am. The Whitesboro Plowshop DIRTCar 358 Modified, Bob Johnson Auto Group DIRTCar Sportsman, Sundance Leisure Thundercars and Donath Motorworx Limited Sportsman will be on hand. Racing begins at 7pm.
