Webb, Shanahan, Howard, St. Mary and Donath Score Big Can-Am Wins Friday Night
The stands were filled with plenty of fans during Encompass Recreation and Channel 7 night at the Can-Am Speedway Friday night as fans got to meet their favorite drives on the race track for driver autographs, before everyone strapped in to put on a great show.
The Donath Motor Worx Limited Sportsman 12 lap feature event took to the speedway first and Haily Brownell was the driver to beat in the early laps over Gage Howard and Camdin Cook. A quick yellow bunched up the field allowing Howard and Cook to get a chance at the top spot. When the green flew Cook went right to work, taking second from Howard and then grabbed the lead from Brownell on lap 8. With just a few laps to go the race changed as the yellow flew again for debris from Brownell’s car after contact with Gage and Brady Howard. Under the caution Camdin Cook went to the pits, leaving Brady Howard in front. On the final restart Brady Howard took off and scored his third win in a row and 5th of the season. Gage Howard, Matt Bukovan, Brianna Murtaugh and Genavieve Bartlett rounded out the top 5.
The Sundance Leisure Thundercar division saw a green to checkered 15 lap feature go, with Anthony St. Mary Jr. jumping to the point over Tony Frezzo. The top two drivers battled hard throughout the event with St. Mary running the inside lane while Frezzo used the outside portion of the speedway. While the top two made it their own race in front, defending track champion Francis White was on the move in a borrowed ride. White took over the St. Mary back up car and charged to the front, eventually taking 4th with a few laps to go. Up front Tony Frezzo made one final run at the leader on the last lap, but Anthony St. Mary Jr. had everyone covered on this night, scoring his division leading third win of the season. Tony Frezzo, Jared Gilson, Francis White and points leader Damien Bechler completed the top 5.
Brian Hudson led early on and was strong in the Whitesboro Plow Shop DIRTCar 358 Modified feature event with RJ Tresidder and Nick Webb right there with him. Hudson started to open up a comfortable lead and it appeared as if he was on his way to his first career win. Behind the leader, Scott Webb, in a brand new car, made his way to the runner up spot and began to close in on the leader. A caution on lap 14 bunched up the field giving Scott Webb, Derek Webb, Lance Willix and Billy Dunn a chance to take the lead. On the restart Scott Webb made his way by as Lance Willix made a big move to take over the runner up spot. Behind the top two Hudson, Derek Webb and Dunn were all locked into a tight battle with Dunn making his way to third and Tim Fuller making a mid race charge as well. Up front, Scott Webb had Lance Willix to deal with as the Theresa driver gave Webb everything and pulled even on several occasions, but could not get by as Dunn, Fuller and Hudson tried to keep pace. The final yellow flew on lap 23 setting up a green white checkered finish. On the final restart Scott Webb did everything right, as he held off a determined Lance Willix and Tim Fuller to score his first win in nearly a year at Can-Am. Willix, Fuller, Billy Dunn and Brian Hudson finished out the top 5.
Ryan Shanahan had dominated his qualifying heat in the Bob Johnson Auto Group DIRTCar Sportsman earlier in the night and the Carthage New York driver carried that momentum over to the 20 lap feature as he pulled away over Paul DeRuyter and Owen Nier. With the top three drivers up front and driving away drivers like Brennan Moore, Josh Reome and Gavin Eisele were also on the move with Moore making his way by Reome in a great battle for 4th. Eisele, who had come into the night having won three races in the last six nights, was making his way forward as well as he got by Reome to move into fifth. Shanahan by lap 12 had over a straight away lead and showed no signs of letting up. Midway through the field, title rivals Mike Fowler and Eric Nier were caught in traffic for the entire night. Nier would gain valuable points on Fowler as the two drivers fought their way to 8th and 11th respectively at the finish. The night belonged to Ryan Shanahan as he drove away and dominated a caution free event for his second win of the season. Paul DeRuyter scored a career best second as Gavin Eisele finished a close third. Owen Nier and Brennan Moore rounded out the top 5.
The final feature of the night was the 20 lap Panther Frameworx Crat Sprint Car division and former Pure Stock and Sportsman driver George Sanford would lead the opening laps over Tucker Donath and Josh Verne Jr. Donath and Sanford exchanged the lead several times in the early laps before Donath took the lead on lap 9 leaving Sanford and Verne to battle for second. With the race going caution free Josh Verne Jr. worked his way to second and tried at will to run down the leader. Verne would get to within 5 car lengths but the night belonged to Tucker Donath as he scored his third win of the year. Josh Verne Jr., Andrew Hennessy, George Sanford and former Sportsman track champion Josh VanBrocklin rounded out the top 5.
The Can-Am Speedway will take next Friday off as staff and management prepare for championship night in the 50th Golden Jubilee Season on August 30th. Racing will begin at 7pm with all five classes in action and four track titles on the line.
