Joshua Shipley Overcomes Mechanical Problems to Bring Home a Top-Five Finish

Inside Line Promotions – QUEEN CREEK, Ariz. (April 24, 2018) – Joshua Shipley and the Verville Motorsports team had a rough start to their ASCS Southwest Region race at Arizona Speedway last Saturday.
“Our main motor that we’ve been running is hurt so it had to come out,” Shipley said. “Our other motor was in the shop and the parts for it didn’t come in time for us to get it back for last weekend. We didn’t have an engine to run.”
Quick on his feet, Shipley called the engine builder for his non-wing car to see if it would work. After being given the green light, they put the engine in the winged car and hoped for the best.
“My confidence was pretty low going into the night,” Shipley said. “We were down about 150 horsepower and we needed to have a decent points night. Thankfully I drew the pole for the heat race.”
The team was pleasantly surprised with the results after Shipley led all but two laps and finished second. His lap times were competitive and the result put Shipley into the feature redraw.
“We drew the No. 3 and I thought that might give us a decent chance to stay up front,” he said. “Alan did a great job with the setup, but due to just the lack of horsepower in the engine we fell back a little.”
Shipley was running around fifth place when the leaders entered traffic. The lapped cars were faster than Shipley on the straightaways, but he was faster in the corners. With the missing horsepower, it was harder to run the top and pass the lapped cars that were running on the bottom, he said.
“I fell back to seventh, but then we had a chance to make some ground with a green-white-checkered finish,” he said. “I picked off a handful of cars and I was about to pass for fourth place when the A Main ended.”
Shipley’s fifth-place result was his second top-five finish with the ASCS Southwest Region this season. He ranks third in the championship standings.
“We were really excited with our performance,” he said. “It just showed the strength of the team. We don’t give up.”
The team will return to action on May 5 at Arizona Speedway with the ASCS Southwest Region.
