Vrbka, Down, Raffurty, Hurley, Harker & Alley are victorious at That 70's Showdown

By Greg Soukup
It felt more like September than early August Saturday at Eagle Raceway as Stumpy’s Custom Creations and Nebraska’s Best Lawn and Landscape presented That 70’s Showdown. Clear blue skies and temperatures in the 70’s gave that feeling of fall.
A very large crowd filled the stands and 167 race teams filled the pits, thanks to the addition of the Vessco Inc. IMCA Mod Lites for their first ever competition at America’s Home Track as a Gil Sonner Memorial event.
There were no serious incidents in the preliminary competition.
During intermission as Roger Hadan and crew did a fluff and buff on the racing surface the previously postponed Kids Color Run was held on Mini E’s track in the infield.
Tyler Jackson was first back to the flag stand on lap 1 of the A1 Iron IMCA Stock Car A in his 13T with the #6 of Jeremy Down second, Matt Boucher’s 5B third and the 22 of Nick Beckman holding down fourth. Down passed Jackson for the lead on lap 6. Beckman moved up to the third spot with 5 laps remaining, lost the spot back to Boucher the next circuit but regained the spot with 2 to go. The final change in the top 4 came on the final lap as Mason Richards passed Boucher to put the 18M into fourth place. The final top 4 were Down, Jackson, Beckman and Richards. Since their feature was run without any cautions, all A Feature drivers will receive free pit admission next week.
I mentioned to Jeremy that this was my first chance ever to interview him, to which he replied “It’s been a while! It’s been 7 years, but we finally got our first one. We were able to capitalize on our starting position inside row 2 and kind of hang it out there towards the end. I saw halfway to go and I didn’t know exactly what was going on. I’m used to maybe seeing someone’s nose or have someone drive around me but I didn’t see either one. When there was 5 to go I started closing in on lapped traffic and that slowed my pace down a little bit. I was hoping that the end of the race would come before I had to pass them but it didn’t. I had to stick it up on the top side of turn 1, hoping it would stick up there and it did. I went right back down to the bottom on the last few laps and was able to keep it stuck right down there and away we went! The track was awesome tonight. I will admit that I can’t drive a dry slick track to save my life. The track had a little bit of character, which I absolutely love! But, it also had that dry slick so that if you weren’t careful it would bite you really quick. I thought it was perfect and hats off to Roger and his crew; it was a damned good track. I need to thank my crew, especially Ernie Riess. He’s 73 years old and has been doing this for over 50 years. For some reason, even if it’s 110 degrees out he comes and sticks it out with us. Seeing him here tonight makes my day. Of course, my wife and kids.” Jeremy’s sponsors include Pro-Tint Glass, Gagner Restoration, Armed Women of America, J & J Racing Engines, Dave Larson Drywall, Sean Smith Trucking and Joe’s Karting.
Lauren Cook spun her 9X out in turn 1 on the first attempt at starting the Avid Realty IMCA Sportmod Feature, causing a complete restart. John Allensworth put the 19X in front on lap 1, followed closely by Joe Feyen’s 25X, the 14M of Dan Latture and Adam Vrbka’s 7V. Vrbka got past Latture on lap 2 for third place as Cole Wayman also passed Latture to put the V18W into fourth. Dion Kovar’s #18 stopped at the bottom of 1 and 2 the next time around for a caution. That brought out the Eastepwheels.com Choose cone with your top 4 picking their restarting positions. They were Feyen, Allensworth, Vrbka and Wayman. Vrbka and Wayman took advantage, jumping up to first and second respectively with Feyen third and Allensworth fourth. Feyen regained second as Aiden Floyd put his 7F into fourth. Wayman and Feyen took turns swapping positions over the next 3 laps with Wayman taking second for good with 7 to go. Meanwhile, Vrbka held his spot on top with Wayman making up 8 car lengths to cut Vrbka’s lead to less than a second at the checkers to grab the win with Wayman second, Feyen third and Floyd in fourth.
This was victory #2 for Adam at Eagle this season. He said “I kind of jumped out to the lead early, held my line and never looked back. I had to hold it to the floor the whole time because I knew Cole Wayman was going to be right behind me the whole time. The lapped cars screwed me up a little bit towards the end, but that made it an interesting race. The track was pretty good tonight. There was a dip in turns 1 and 2 and I kept hitting it. I couldn’t figure those corners out. If I had went a little bit lower I think I could have missed it. I must have been hitting it just right.” Adam’s sponsors include Conservative Car Sales, Unlimited Sports Solutions, Eagle Automotive, Long Shot Repair, Wojo Painting, Fritzen Farms, Clive Bannister, Stephenson Truck Repair, Skip’s Equipment, Mook Trucking and JP Equipment.
Next up was the Main event for the Nebraska’s Best Lawn and Landscape IMCA Modifieds. Tyler Harr put the 21T in the lead on lap 1 with Tracy Harr’s 21 second, Cameron Thompson third in the 2T and Nate Thompson’s 3T fourth. Nate Thompson moved past Cameron Thompson on lap 6 to grab third place. Cameron Thompson slowed to a stop out of turn 2 on lap 9 and the yellow flag was brought out as was the Choose Cone. The resulting top 4 were Tracy Harr, Tyler Harr, Mike Densberger’s 81 and Nate Thompson. The restart was called off. When they got going again it was Tracy Harr, Adam Armstrong’s 60, Densberger and Nate Thompson. Bob Zoubek’s 5S hit the spin cycle in turns 1 and 2 the next circuit to bring the Choose Cone out again, setting up another restart with the same top 4. Armstrong fell back to fourth on the restart with Nate Thompson jumping up to second. Densberger spun out in turns 1 and 2 with 9 laps left. The Choose Cone restart order was Tracy Harr, Nate Thompson, Shawn Harker in the #40 and the 8C of Chad Andersen. Nate Thompson, Harker and Andersen all passed Tracy Harr on the restart to move to first, second and third respectively. Harker grabbed the lead away from Nate Thompson the next time around with the 41A of Adam Wasserman jumping up to third with Andersen fourth. Nate Thompson took over the top spot the following lap but lost the position back to Harker the next circuit as Andersen moved to third. The final change in the leaders came on the final lap when Andersen passed Nate Thompson, making the final top 4 Harker, Andersen, Nate Thompson and Wasserman.
This was Harker’s third victory in a row after starting 12th and fourth this season lengthening his season points lead over Armstrong. He stated “Sometimes we get lucky 3 times in a row!! The car was great, the driver did alright, did his job and it worked out again. I want to thank Roger and Eagle; one heck of a facility.” Shawn’s sponsors include Roads Chassis, Speedway Shocks, Jet Racing, Patriot Crane and Rigging, Shark Bait Candy, “R” Cart Services, Noonan Industries, King Equipment, Patriot Heavy Haul, Tex Cattle. Speedway Racing Engines and Final Grade.
The Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock A Feature saw Tanner Dowty’s 7T out front on lap 1, followed by the 12T of Tanner Jones, Troy Dowty in the 17T and the 7X of Tyler Phelps. Troy Dowty jumped to the lead on lap 2 as Phelps moved up to second with Ben Becher also getting past Tanner Dowty to put the B4 into fourth place. Colin Hein joined the top 4 the next lap in his 19H with Tyler Lambertes’ 24T fourth. Lap 7 saw Dillon Richards jump all of the way up to second place in the 24R, only to spin to the infield after contact with Phelps. That made your top 4 Hein, Troy Dowty, Phelps and Lambertus. Brayden Hurley vaulted up to third in the 38 with 10 to go, moving Phelps back to fourth. 5 laps remained when Troy Dowty slid up into Richards in turns 1 and 2, causing a flat right rear tire on the 24R and turning the yellow lights on in the corners. Richards headed to the pits for a fresh tire and rejoined the field at the rear. Your top 4 after the Choose Cone were Hurley, Hein, Trenton Dowty and Troy Dowty. Lambertus passed Troy Dowty on the restart to regain fourth place. Hein got past Hurley the next lap to take the top spot but lost it back to Hurley the following circuit. Ben Becher looped the B4 in turn 4 with just 2 laps left, setting up a green/white/checkered single file finish. Dillon Richards came from the rear of the field to take the fourth position on the final lap, making your top 4 Hurley, Hein, Trenton Dowty and Richards.
I complimented Brayden on his run from 11th on the starting grid to the win, and he stated “I was very happy about that. The field seemed to be bouncing off of each other more than usual, especially with last week’s winner. I was just trying to keep my nose clean. The track had character tonight for sure, but other than that I love racing here. I can’t complain about the character because it was fast.” Brayden’s sponsors include Tom’s Delivery Service, Little Keepers Photography, Demon Decals and Charger Chassis.
The first lap of the Nebraska Septic IMCA Racesaver Sprint Car A Main was led by the 9A of Hunter Hanson with Trevor Grossenbacher’s 35, the 77X of John Klabunde and Brandon Horton in the 1B. Klabunde passed Grossenbacher for second on lap 3 but lost the spot back to him the following lap. Horton got past Klabunde on lap 8 to take over the third spot. Grossenbacher moved to the lead on lap 10 as Billy Alley put his #11 into fourth place. Alley moved up to third on lap 13 and took over second place 2 laps later. With 10 to go Bret Klabunde hit the implement tire inside turn 2 and spun to a stop. The Choose Cone restart order was Alley, Grossenbacher, Hanson and Horton. Alley took the lead on the restart with Horton passing both Grossenbacher and Hanson to jump up to second place with Jason Danley putting the 4X into fourth. The top 4 remained unchanged to the checkers with Alley, Horton, Grossenbacher and Danley your top 4.
Billy was a long-time fan favorite at Eagle 10 years ago, making his comeback during 3 runs last year with 1 of those being a victory at Eagle. “I quit 10 years ago when my daughter was born and my son was 4 it was time to step away for a while. Now my kids are grown up; my son is starting his first year of high school. I’ve learned that racing makes me happy. It gives me a little pep in my step. The things I used to hate about racing when I was doing it full time are the things that I missed most about it. Working on the car during the week and travelling up and down the road. We haven’t done much of that yet this year, but I think next year we’ll do a little more of that. I hope I can race another 5 or 6 years before I call it quits for good. Hopefully, this go around I can be half as fast as I was before. ‘m doing it for a totally different reason this time. I try to not get too upset or too worked up if things don’t go right. I’m not racing to impress anyone; I’m just racing for myself and racing for the guys that work on my race car. My wife laughs at me when I say that I do it for fun, but that’s the thing. It’s not necessarily about winning any more, it’s about being out there competing. It’s hard to race when you’re a competitive person and don’t win so tonight it felt great to get that off of our shoulders. We’ve been so close this year but just haven’t put a whole night together. Everything mechanically went our way. One feature this year I thought we were going to win pretty easily but had a magneto go bad. Another feature there was 4 laps to go. That was the night that the purse was up and the laps were up to 30 from the usual 25. I had a lapped car get a little out of control and that cost us another victory. It’s nice to get the monkey off of our backs; we needed this.” I mentioned the battle towards the end of the race and asked Billy if he thought that he could have caught and passed Trevor, to which he said “I don’t know. I think it would have been tough. If it had stayed green Trevor was making some good laps around the top and Tyler had his car going really good around the top. Trevor is one of the best there is at running the top at Eagle so it definitely would have been tough to track him down. He had a fast race car. I went back and looked at lap times. He was fast, but it’s tough to pass on a top dominant track. Sometimes in a Racesaver sprint it’s hard to keep up the momentum and make a pass. When that restart happened, I knew that that was our best shot. I was really surprised when Trevor chose to go to the top because of the way that the rules are. In most sprint car series that have a double file restart, the leader gets to set the pace for the restart. The person in second place can’t go until the leader goes. That would have made it a lot tougher if Trevor could have gotten going first on that restart. With all of the moisture on the bottom of the track tonight and he went to the top I got a big grin on my face. Even on that first restart early in the race, we both started going at the same time. He saw how much of a run I was going to get so he slowed down and it looked like I really jumped the start. The second time I played it a little bit better but still ended up getting a bit of a jump. I was surprised that Horton got around Trevor; I thought Trevor ran second. Horton didn’t have brakes either, he had a caliper go bad. He’s been running really good. He's one of the drivers out there that when I’m around him I feel really comfortable. He’s a fun guy to race with, and so is Trevor. You can just feel comfortable racing against them, go wheel to wheel and not worry. I won’t say that about everybody out there because sometimes things can get really hairy. All in all, I’m having a lot of fun! We’ve run really well this year; we just haven’t put together a win. It seems like we would DNF or we would run in the top 3 or 4 spots. The last couple of weeks we’ve been fighting brake issues. Last night we changed every single brake part on the car after the heat race. I didn’t have any brakes. We put a new front axle in it because we had some issues with other pieces. It was nice to be able to run the whole feature with brakes. Toby, Rich and Bill work their butts off every week, so it was nice to get a win for those guys for once.” Billy’s sponsors include Jeff Stefonik Motorsports and J&K Trucking.
The finale on the evening was the $1,500 to win A Feature for the Vesco Inc. IMCA Mod Lites. Andrea Wagner’s 13 led lap 1 with the 47 of Ed Griggs second, Dan Keltner third in his 29K and Charlie Brown fourth in the 82. Keltner grabbed the lead on lap 2 with Griggs holding onto second, Brown third and Wagner. Justin Raffurty passed Wagner on lap 3 to put the #75 into fourth. Raffurty moved up to third the next lap, moving Brown back to fourth. The yellow flag was displayed on lap 7 for debris on the track. The Choose Cone restart order was Griggs, Keltner, Brown and Raffurty. Keltner led the ensuing restart with Griggs, Brown and Raffurty rounding out the top 4. The restart saw Keltner out front, Griggs second, Raffurty third and the 64 of Randy Bryan fourth. Raffurty got past Griggs for second on lap 10 to take second place. Doug Pollock spun to a stop on the front stretch with 8 laps remaining to bring out the caution flag. Chris Lomasney also stopped on the front stretch with right front problems and went to the pits on the hook. The Choose Cone restart order was Raffurty, Keltner, Bryan and Griggs. Raffurty took the lead on the restart, putting Keltner back to second. Just 6 laps were left when the 22 of Kevin Lugenbeel came to a halt on the front stretch. The single file restart’s top 4 were Raffurty, Keltner, Griggs and Bryan. The next lap saw the 4G of Ben George pass Bryan for fourth and move past Griggs for third on the last lap. Your final top 4 were Raffurty, Keltner, George and Griggs.
Justin made his first ever visit to America’s Home Track a big one, taking home $1,500 for his victory. He started competing in the Vessco Inc. Mod Lites when he was just 12 years old and is now in his 16th year in them. He stated “I started out in my Grandpa’s Dwarf Car but competing with the Mod Lites. He retired and we still had the car laying around. That’s how I got my number for the car. I’ve been racing with the family ever since. They haven’t run the Mod Lites here for probably 20 years now. My uncle came out and won. This has been a bucket list track all of my life. I’ve always wanted to run here, but they never had a Mod Lite race here. When I saw this race pop up I put it on my calendar immediately. The track was an absolute blast tonight. I’ve always dreamt of racing here. I’ve watched videos and I’ve played it on video games. Eagle has just been a bucket list track all of my life. We’re a little under 3 hours away, but I’d race here weekly if I could. This was a really good time. I want to say thanks to my wife, my son and my Dad. They’re the ones who keep me going every single week. I couldn’t do it without them.”
Justin’s sponsors include Wholesale Batteries and Raffurty Chassis.
With just 3 regular season races left, and the 13th annual IMCA Racesaver Nationals a month away, followed by the year ending Stewart Alley Memorial after that, you’d better get your racing fix before it’s too late!!
Also, the battle for points is close with every point crucial in the competition for track championships.
