Eagle Raceway
Schouten, Pike, Homan, Richards & Andersen claim Glory on July 12th at Eagle Raceway
By Greg Soukup
I cannot recall a more beautiful July evening at the races that compares the one that greeted everyone Saturday at Eagle Raceway as Meininger Fire Protection. A hazy sky and low 80’s temperatures saw a total of 151 cars in the pits and a very big crowd in the grandstands.
In a testament to the skills of the Eagle Raceway track prep crew, the surface was so fast that Jacob Dye set a new track record for the IMCA Racesaver sprints at 12.171 seconds. Door handle to door handle, 2 and 3 wide racing was the rule throughout the program.
There were 2 serious incidents in the preliminary racing. In the initial heat race for the Nebraska Septic IMCA Racesaver Sprint Cars Stu Snyder’s #5 slid up into the 12T of Tyler Drueke entering turn 3, sending him sliding up the track and into the Armco wall and eventually into a slow rollover. He was not seriously injured, but his crew had to thrash to replace both the front and rear ends and both wings to allow him to run the B Feature. Then, in the Nebraska Lawn and Landscape IMCA Modified’s first heat, Cameron Thompson in the 2T slid up into the 99W of Hunter Weber, sending him up into the 1Z of Norm Ziegenbein. Ziegenbein’s racer was then turned sideways which caused his car to turn down into Thompson sending the 1Z flying into a pirouette in the air and coming to a halt at the entrance to turn 3. I spoke to Ziegenbein after the races and he assured me that he would be back at Eagle next week “But not with a car. This one is destroyed and I don’t have the funds to get another car. My head flew forward when I came down and I’m sure I’ll be sore in the morning.”
Mason Day’s #6 spun sideways into turn 1 on the beginning lap of the Nebraska Septic IMCA Racesaver Sprint A Feature and the 08 of Chase Koelliker couldn’t quite get around him and ended up clipping Day’s left rear tire, nearly climbing the wall and going into a slow rollover. He was not seriously hurt but his night was over. The restart saw Jacob Dye’s 20D in the lead with Gene Ackland’s 14G, the 25 of Gunnar Pike and Adam Gullion’s 91 rounding out the top 4. Dan Satriano suffered a flat right rear tire on lap 2 and the yellow flag was displayed. The EastepWheels.com Choose Cone was set on the front stretch with Dye, Pike, Ackland and Gullion the new lineup for the front 2 rows. Pike and Gullion both passed Dye on the restart, moving Dye back to third place. Bret Klabunde passed Ackland on lap 4 to put the 77 into fourth position. Tige Jensen took over fourth place on lap 10 in his #24. There were 9 circuits remaining when Joey Danley got past Jensen to put the 14 into fourth. 2 laps later the right rear tire assembly on Klabunde’s car came completely off and rolled into the infield. That slowed the action as Klabunde was towed to his pit. Gullion, Pike, Danley and Dye were the front 2 rows after the Choose Cone reset the field. Gullion slowed dramatically and stopped on the restart and the Choose Cone was again placed on the front stretch. The new restart lineup’s 2 front rows were Joey Danley, Pike, Jason Danley’s 4X and Dye. Dye jumped up to second on the restart with Joey Danley and Jensen third and fourth. The next lap Jensen hit the rear bumper of Jason Danley, sending Jason sliding down the front stretch on its right side and eventually rolling over. That signaled a single file restart with Pike, Joey Danley, Dye and Jensen your top 4. Trevor Grossenbacher got under and past Jensen on the restart to snag the fourth spot. The top 4 remained unchanged to the checker with Pike winning, Joey Danley second, Dye third and Grossenbacher fourth.
This was Gunnar’s first win ever at Eagle. It wasn’t hard to tell that this was a huge weight off his shoulders by the grin on his face. He said “It’s been a minute. I’ve won everywhere but my home track, so it feels pretty good to actually get the win tonight. We had a little bit of luck on our side, but I’d rather be lucky than good any day of the week, especially here with how fast everybody is. There’s no such thing as an easy night here. Luckily that first incident gave me a few spots, and I was pretty aggressive early. My plan was just to get up there and pace myself. We’ve been really good the past week or so. We found something going into Columbus that we’ve just been off on all year but finally found it. We just haven’t been getting the best out of our motors, and I’ll take responsibility for that. Now, I think we’re good.” Gunnar’s sponsors include S&L Trenching, Avid Realty by Kyle Gabriel, Grass Assassins, Tailored Computers, Myers Racing Engines, Westover Rock and Sand, Slade Shock Technology, Trev Window Wings, VOG Performance and Automotive LLC, RK Ink, Hi Plains Building Division, Carbon Safety Technologies, Goliath Nutrition and Gateway Custom Homes Inc.
The Avid Realty IMCA Sportmods were next for their Main Event. Josh Pfeifer led lap 1 in the 33J, followed by the 9X of Lauren Cook, Randy Fox in the 09RX and the 24RE of Arie Schouten. Schouten passed Fox for third on lap 2 and got past Cook on lap 3 to grab second place. Dion Kovar took over the fourth spot on lap 7, putting the #18 into fourth. Schouten grabbed the lead with 10 to go but it didn’t count as Zane Woodman spun his 73Z out in turn 4. At the Choose Cone it was Pfeifer, Schouten, Cook and Kovar. Kovar passed Cook on the restart to move up to third as Jacob Swanson also got past Cook to take over fourth in his 31S. Cole Wayman advanced to fourth the next time around in the V18W. Kovar and Pfeifer got together on the back stretch the following circuit with Pfeifer heading into the infield. That allowed Kovar to take the lead with Schouten, Swanson and Wayman second through fourth. Wayman passed Swanson the next lap to move up to third. Schouten grabbed the lead away from Kovar with 5 laps left. Schouten’s car began to show smoke from the rear the next lap but didn’t slow. There was a 4 car melee in turns 3 and 4 the next time around as Derek Hall’s 44D, the 88F of Rich Flock, Fox and the 18M all came to a halt moving Cook back to fourth. Also, the smoke from Schouten’s rear end became much worse as the field idled under caution. The restart saw Mary Hahn put the #17 into fourth place. Wayman got past Kovar for second place with 2 to go. The final change in the top 4 came on the final circuit as Aiden Floyd passed Hahn to put the 7F into fourth. Your final top 4 were Schouten, Wayman, Kovar and Floyd. Floyd was disqualified during tech inspection for an illegal right front shock, moving Hahn back up to fourth.
This was Arie’s initial Eagle Raceway victory this year. He related “It’s been a long year, just tearing stuff up every week and tearing other people up and I really want to apologize for that. I took a couple of weeks off to regroup and calm down. I came back in a better state of mind and in a better head space, allowing me to stay calm and keep everything together. I have to thank Nick Morris who’s been helping us out a lot, and my crew. Chris Saunders and Alex and my cousin Terry. There’s so many people every week that help me get down the road”. Arie’s sponsors include Upstream Concrete, Easy Street Design, Drew’s United Roofing and Siding, Midstate Machine, Rage Chassis, Berry Racing and Augie’s Towing.
The Nebraska’s Best Lawn and Landscape IMCA Modified Feature was next. Nate Thompson put the 3T out front of lap 1 with Brandon Verbeek’s 4B, the 27 of Clint Homan and Cade Richards’ 1R close behind. Homan grabbed the lead on lap 2. Verbeek passed Homan on lap 4 as Shawn Harker got past Richards to put his #40 into fourth position. The next lap retook the second spot and Harker followed Homan into third after 1 more lap. Mike Densberger passed Verbeek after 1 more lap to take fourth in the 81. Homan finally passed Thompson on lap 8 to take the lead. Harker also got past Thompson two circuits later to move up to second place. Densberger advanced to third place with 8 to go. Harker snatched the lead away from Homan the next lap but lost the spot back to Homan the next time around. The next change in the top 4 came with just 5 circuits left when Chad Andersen moved up to fourth place in the 8C, only to lose the position to Adam Armstrong’s 60 the next time around. Your top 4 were Homan, Harker, Densberger and Armstrong.
This was Clint’s second win at Eagle in 2025, having taken the victory back during April 6th’s season opener. He stated “It was a pretty good race with Shawn those 3 or 4 laps. I caught a rut down there and got crossed up, but then he hit that same rut the next lap. It was a close fight. He said I raced him a little tight, but we’re both racing for the win and I know he’d do the same to me. This feels really good, especially after the last few weeks. We broke a J bar last week and we’ve been struggling a little bit.”
Clint’s sponsors include Homan’s Auto, Razor Chassis, Julie-Daugherty Braun, Pierce Family Racing, BW Ag LLC, GRT Race Cars, Behnke Lawn Care, 5 Star Custom Barnwood Frames, T-Doggs Lawn and Landscape, NAPA Auto Parts and Auto Zone.
Nick Shannon’s 7S, the 10K of Lee Kracht, Tanner Dowty’s 7T and the 72T of Tyler Ramsey were the top 4 after 1 circuit of the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock A. Dillon Richards passed Ramsey for fourth on lap 3 in his 24R and moved up to third 3 laps later. 2 more circuits were in the books when Richards got past Dowty to take over second place before snagging the lead from Shannon the following lap. Neil Pella put the 3N into the fourth spot on lap 8 and advanced to third place with 9 to go As Kracht held onto fourth. 6 to go saw Dan Markham’s #6 get loose on the front stretch, sliding up into Kracht and hitting the front stretch wall. Kracht kept going but Markham stopped at the pit entrance. The yellow lights came on in the corners and the Choose Cone was put on the front stretch. The top 2 rows on the restart were Richards, Shannon, Brad Schreiner’s 10 and Pella. Pella jumped all of the way up to second on the restart but lost the spot to Schreiner the next lap. Dave Carter put the 2C into fourth the next time around. 1 lap remained when Adam Davis spun the 10A out in turn 4 for another caution and setting up a green/white/checkered finish. Despite a valiant attempt by Schreiner Richards held on for the win with Schreiner, Pella and Carter rounding out the top 4.
The top 2 were a reversal of last week’s results where Richards suffered a flat tire in his heat and ended up second to Schreiner after winning the hobby stock creature features. I mentioned that to Dillon who replied “Yep. Started last in the C, won it, started last in the B, won it and made it all the way up to second in the A. I had much better luck tonight and only had to come from 12th. I have to thank my crew for all of their hard work every week and a big thanks to my sponsors because I couldn’t do it without them”. Dillon’s sponsors include Koozer Painting, Fester’s Bait and Tackle, Swift Racing Springs, S & L Trenching, Noonan Industries LLC, Multi Fire Plug Wires, Aero Wheels, Integra Shocks, Backspin Entertainment, Van’s Waterproofing, Toy Scout, Nelson Tree Service, Cat’s Fireworks, Seven2Carts, Epp Farms, Wiring Solutions, Precision Auto Tune Inc., Neapco, In Memory of Jr Craig, In Memory of Tom Miller, Troy Cepak, Jet Racing, Extreme Motorsports, Schafer’s Oil, Schoenfeld Headers, Inline Healing, 4G’s Powder Coating and Freese Farms.
Chad Andersen took off from outside the front row to put his 8C out front of the A Feature for the A1 Iron IMCA Stock cars, followed closely by the 13T of Tyler Jackson, Tommy Etherton in the 24T and the 35JW of Casey Woken. Etherton moved up to second on lap 2 but gave the position back to Jackson on lap 5 with Woken taking third. Sadly, Jackson’s engine expired the next lap and he stopped at the exit of turn 2. That moved Kyle Vanover’s 19 up to fourth after the Choose Cone reset the front 2 rows. Vanover passed Etherton on the restart to move up to third. Vanover wasted no time at all, taking the second spot away from Woken the next circuit. Benji Legg cracked the top 4 2 laps later to put the 84 into third and set his sights on second running Vanover. It wasn’t to be as Andersen held on for a nearly 3 second win over Vanover who finished second, third place went to Legg and Woken came home fourth.
This was win #3 in the Stock Cars at Eagle for Chad. He said “I was excited. We finished third in the third heat. I went to draw a pill for the feature and there was just the 2 and the 6 left, so I said to myself ‘Man! Here comes the 6. I just know it!! I flipped it over and it was the 2. I haven’t been excited for a little while, getting to start up front but I Was pretty excited because I knew the car was fast. I knew that Vanover and Woken and the rest would be coming, but they had to start way back, so I figured I would get a good run and get a good lead, hopefully find my rhythm in clean air and just go. *It worked out and it was a good race”.
Chad’s sponsors include Dinker’s Bar and Grill, Bobcat of Omaha, Big Red Towing, Countryside Contracting LLC, Paddy McGown’s Pub and Grill, Razor Chassis, Logeman Auto Parts and Machine, Five Star Frameworks, Only Pro Decaling, Flatfoot Trucking, Utility Trenching, and Jake Murphy.
Next Saturday is Driver Salute Night, presented by Pepsi. All 5 classes will be in action, including the A1 Iron IMCA Stock Cars, Avid Realty Sportmods, Nebraska’s Best Lawn and Landscape Modifieds, Valentino’s Hobby Stocks and Nebraska Septic Sprint Cars.
The running order will be A1 Iron IMCA Stock Cars, Nebraska Septic Sprint Cars, Avid Realty Sportmods, Nebraska’s Best Lawn and Landscape Modifieds and the Valentino’s Hobby Stocks. The Hobby Stocks will be competing for a purse increased by $2000 with $350 to win and $100 to start the A Feature.
