Eagle Raceway
Hahn, Andersen, Richards, Salzman & Richards are victorious at Freedom Fest
By Greg Soukup
Ask me my favorite spring and summer day and I’ll tell you that it’s race day at my favorite dirt track. Then, ask me what my most special of those race days was and I’ll say that it was this past Saturday when Avid Realty, A1 Iron and Pepsi Cola of Lincoln presented Freedom Fest at Eagle Raceway!!!
139 teams in the pits, a big crowd in the stands and a beautiful day made the festivities even greater.
There were no serious incidents in the heats or preliminary features.
The first A Main was for the Nebraska’s Best Lawn and Landscape IMCA Modifieds. Cameron Thompson led lap #1 in the 2T followed closely by Tyler Harr in the 21T, Bob Zoubek’s 5s and the 8C of Chad Andersen. Andersen got past Zoubek on lap 5 to move up to third with John Saathoff putting the 96J into fourth. Andersen advanced to second on lap 9 and passed Thompson for the lead on lap 12. With 6 laps remaining Jaxon Saathoff got past his dad John to put the #96 into fourth, only to lose the spot back to him two laps later. No changes were made in the top 4 with Andersen winning, Harr second, Thompson third and John Saathoff fourth.
This was win #2 in the modifieds this season at Eagle for Chad to go along with 2 victories in the A1 Iron IMCA Stock Cars. He said “The track was pretty racey tonight. It didn’t change much in the heat race. We started inside the fourth row and I was just trying to pick them off when I could. I wasn’t too sure about the setup on my car but we’re getting it back dialed in pretty good. I can’t thank all of my sponsors enough for all that they do for me. Also, Andy and Ray for all the hours we spend in the shop just to keep these cars running up front. I was hoping to go 2 for 2 tonight, but we got 2nd in the stock cars. We needed a caution there but all in all we had a great night.” Chad’s sponsors include Dinker’s Bar and Grill, Bobcat of Omaha, Big Red Towing, Countryside Contracting LLC, Paddy McGown’s Pub and Grill, Razor Chassis, Logeman Auto Parts and Machine, Five Star Frameworks, Only Pro Decaling, Flatfoot Trucking, Utility Trenching, Continental Battery Systems and Jake and April.
Marty Steinbach put the 5ELI out front on the first circuit of the A1 Iron IMCA Stock Car A with Mike Scheinost’s 51 second, Jeff Watts third in the 66 and Ryan Gilland fourth in the 46. Gilland jumped up to second on lap 2 with Mason Richards taking the 18M into fourth. Richards passed Scheinost for third on lap 4. Nick Beckman joined the top 4 the next lap in his #22. Gilland took over the top spot on lap 7 but Steinbach took it back the following circuit with Richards also passing Gilland to move up to second. Richards kept moving forward, taking the lead on lap 10 as Chad Andersen put the 8C into fourth place. Andersen advanced to the third spot with 7 to go and passed Steinbach for second place 2 laps later. Richards bobbled in turn 3 and 4 with 2 to go but Andersen could get no closer than 4 car lengths behind. Richards, Andersen, Steinbach and Gilland were your top 4.
This was win #4 on the year for Mason. He obviously inherited his father Terry’s talent for racing and is benefiting from Dad’s tutelage also. As of Saturday, Mason is leading IMCA National and Regional rookie points, leads state IMCA points, Eagle Raceway points as well as having the points lead at Concordia. To top it off he’s running fourth in overall IMCA National points. He related ‘Believe it or not, we’ve been having fueling issues all night with the car and that slowed us down in the heat race. We thought we got it fixed for the feature but it was still doing the same thing the first few laps while I was trying to catch up to Gilland and Steinbach. Luckily, there was a bottom lane that we could drive off. As soon as the motor got wound up it would misfire and start popping and everything. There was that line on the bottom that we could cruise on. I want to thank my mom and Dad for all that they do for me and of course all of my sponsors.” C&L Automotive, TR’s Tool Service, Jet Racing, Wealth Management, Spanel Engines, Blackstone Builders, Riha Lawn Mechanics, Grill Starters and N&N Auto.
The Nebraska Septic IMCA Racesaver Sprint Cars then rolled out onto the track for their A Feature. Troy Sanford’s #12 was first back to the flag stand to grab the lead over the 25A of Alex Davenport, Cameron Thompson’s 2T and the 2A of Alex Salzman. Salzman passed Thompson on lap 2 for third place and advanced to second the following circuit. Thompson spun out in turns 1 and 2 on lap 11, bringing out the Eastepwheels.com Choose Cone. The restart order was Sanford, Salzman, Bret Klabunde in the #77 and Davenport. Davenport passed Klabunde a lap after the restart to grab third. Brandon Horton put his 1B into fourth place on lap 15. Shayle Bade did a 360-degree spin in turn 4 with 8 to go but managed to keep going. Unfortunately, the yellow flag was thrown, slowing the action and bringing out the Choose Cone again. The restart order was Sanford, Salzman, Davenport and Horton. The restart saw Klabunde spin out on the backstretch and the Choose Cone reappeared with Horton and Davenport swapping restart positions. Adam Gullion used the subsequent restart to put the #91 into fourth place. Salzman got a big run down the back stretch and took the lead away from Sanford with just 5 circuits left, lost the spot back to him the next time around and regained it after 1 more lap. Horton also passed Sanford on the next lap to move up to second. Gullion jumped up to second place when he passed both Sanford and Horton on the last lap. Your top 4 were Salzman, Gullion, Horton and Sanford. As Salzman made his way to the infield out of turn 4 to do his best to win the Gatsby Glass Party On Award he made slight contact with Horton and proceeded to spin several cookies; no small feat in a sprint car.
The only thing I enjoy more than interviewing first time winners is when they are a low budget family team in just their fourth year of racing. He stated “First EVER sprint car win for me. We’ve had a few heat race wins but this is our first A Feature. Troy and I always have a really good battle. I enjoy racing with him all the time. He’s always clean and we both know that we don’t have to worry about taking each other out. This is just our fourth year in a sprint car. We’re still pretty new and it’s a big feat for us to come out here and compete with these local guys and the veteran drivers who have been out here quite a few years.” I mentioned to him the lack of sponsors on his car, to which he replied “Yeah! That’s one thing that we’re working on. We’ve been seeking help from some people on how to get sponsors because the extra support would really help us.” If you would like to help out this low budget team with a contribution or get your business name in front of thousands of people weekly, get ahold of Alex during or after the races. His team pits on the west side of the far north pit area.
The Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock finale saw Robert Salts in the lead on lap 1 in the 10-4 with Tyler Phelps’ 7X second, the 76H of Jason Hansen third with fourth place going to Eric Chab’s 11. Nick Jensen passed Chab for fourth on lap 2 in his 48J. The fourth spot changed hands again the next time around when Ben Becher took over the position in the B4. Once again fourth place changed on lap 5 when Dillon Richards took over the position in the 24R before moving up to third place the following circuit. Brad Schreiner’s #10 right front contacted the left rear of Matt RotSchaefer’s 14R on the front stretch the next circuit, sending Rotschafer into the wall as the 66G of Kyle Gannon was collected and spun to a stop in the infield. The Choose Cone set the restart lineup of Phelps, Salts, Chab and Richards. The restarts saw Phelps, Richards, Chab and the 12 of Michael Wade your top 4. Richards grabbed the lead away from Phelps with 10 to go as Wade moved up to third. Wade got around Phelps for second with 8 laps left. Richards pulled away to a straightaway victory over Wade, Phelps and ChaB.
This was Dillon’s 8th consecutive win in 2025 and his 30th overall for the season. Going into this week Dillon led Daniel Wauters by 68 points in the National and Regional IMCA Points, and trailed Joe Beller by just 33 in the Nebraska State points. Dillon left before being interviewed.
Dillon’s sponsors include Koozer Painting, Fester’s Bait and Tackle, Swift Racing Springs, S & L Trenching, Noonan Industries LLC, Multi Fire Plug Wires, Aero Wheels, Integra Shocks, Backspin Entertainment, Van’s Waterproofing, Toy Scout, Nelson Tree Service, Cat’s Fireworks, Seven2Carts, Epp Farms, Wiring Solutions, Precision Auto Tune Inc., Neapco, In Memory of Jr Craig, In Memory of Tom Miller, Troy Cepak, Jet Racing, Extreme Motorsports, Schafer’s Oil, Schoenfeld Headers, Inline Healing, 4G’s Powder Coating and Freese Farms.
Lastly the Avid Realty IMCA Sportmods rolled out onto the high banked 1/3 mile. They were the draw/redraw class this week with an additional $2000 added to their purse. Mary Hahn put her #17 out front of the first circuit with Jacob Swanson second in the 31S, Aiden Floyd’s 7F third and fourth place being held by the 7V of Adam Vrbka. James Hines looped the 31R in turn 4 on lap 2 to bring out the Choose Cone. Swanson, Hahn, Floyd and Vrbka led the field Back to the restart. Hahn took the lead as Vrbka moved up to second with Swanson holding onto third and Cole Wayman putting the V18W into fourth place. Swanson got back past Vrbka for second the following lap. The 413 of Beau Riffel stopped just before the pit exit in turn 1 on lap 7 and the Choose Cone was placed on the front stretch. Hahn, Wayman, Swanson and Vrbka were the top 4. Vrbka took over the top spot on the restart with Wayman moving to third. Hahn took the lead back the next time around as Wayman also passed Vrbka to take over second. From there to the checkers the battle for the lead was ferocious but although Wayman managed to pull alongside Hahn she held on for the victory with Wayman second, Vrbka third and Swanson fourth.
This was Mary’s second win in a row at America’s Home Track. I asked about the battle for the lead towards the end of the race and she said “I knew someone was there because I saw them sticking their nose underneath me. I knew that if I held my line and was consistent that we’d be good. ‘Just don’t mess up’ was my goal from then on. I tried to hit my marks the best that I could. There was a little rough patch in 1 and 2 which upset the car but I did what I could with that and we got it done.” Mary’s sponsors include 6 to 6 Auto, Chad Bornemeyer Trucking and Jared Baily Photography.
Following a fantastic night of racing, the evening was topped off by one of THE BEST fireworks show that you’ll ever see. 13 minutes of thunderous explosions coupled with glorious light effects kept all in attendance enthralled.
