Richards, Hahn, Andersen, Andersen & Waller are victorious at Eagle

By Greg Soukup
Saturday’s event at Eagle Raceway was Saturday Night Lights, presented by Hippo Equipment and Nebraska’s Best Lawn and Landscape.
Richards Simmons was nowhere to be seen but believe me when I say that it was ‘Sweating at the races night’ as well. From over 100 degrees the temperatures dropped to a crisp (or is it crispy) 95 at race time, thanks to everything being pushed back by an hour. That would have made it a miserable evening, were it not for a strong south wind making it tolerable.
129 teams filled the pits, braving the heat and just itching to put on a show for the fans; a feat that they more than provided.
There were 2 serious incidents in the preliminary action, both in the Nebraska Septic IMCA Racesaver Sprints. Heat 3 saw Bret Klabunde snap rolled several times coming out of turn 2, ending up over the back stretch wall on his side. In the B Feature, Ty Ledger’s 35L right rear tire made contact with the left rear of the 24T of Trevor Serbus going into turn 1. Both cars kept going until Ledger hit the back stretch wall, bounced off and caught Serbus again, sending them both flipping into turn 3. All 3 drivers were not seriously injured.
The A1 Iron IMCA Stock Car A Feature’s initial start was negated when Roger Elliot’s 6K spun in turn 4. Tommy Etherton led the first official lap in the 24T followed by the 44X of Cash Beckman, Mike Scheinost’s 51 and the 5J of Jakob Boucher. Scott Carlson jumped past both Scheinost and Boucher on lap 2 to move up to third. Mason Richards passed Scheinost on lap 4 to put the 18M into fourth. Carlson got past Beckman the following lap for second. Lap 10 saw Kyle Vanover join the top 4, vaulting past Richards to take over third place. Riley Ruisinger’s #7 spun to a halt in turn 4 with 8 laps left for another caution. That brought out the EastepWheels.com Choose Cone for a double file restart. That restart saw Chad Andersen jump all the way up to second with Vanover third and Carlson fourth. Andersen took over the lead with 6 to go as Vanover followed him into second and Benji Legg putting the 84 into fourth. The top 4 remained unchanged with Andersen winning, Vanover second, Etherton third and Legg fourth.
This was Chad’s second victory in the class and went along with a win in the Nebraska’s Best Lawn and Landscape IMCA Modifieds in 2025. The win came after starting 13th. “We missed the invert in our heat and I was happy to have to run the B Feature. I didn’t know what the weather was going to do to the track with it being so hot. Roger must have put a lot of water down to keep the track pretty racey. All in all, both of my cars are in one piece. We spent a lot of hours this week going through the modified, getting it ready. We ran second in it, but we’ll take that. I feel like we’re getting better every week in the stock car and I feel like I’m not making mistakes. I need to time my moves and pick and choose where I want to go and take the right one at the right time. Everybody is so close in the stock cars, everybody is so fast.” Chad’s sponsors include Dinker’s Bar and Grill, Bobcat of Omaha, Big Red Towing, Countryside Contracting LLC, Paddy McGown’s Pub and Grill, Razor Chassis, Logeman Auto Parts and Machine, Five Star Frameworks, Only Pro Decaling, Flatfoot Trucking, Utility Trenching, Continental Battery Systems and Jake and April.
Mary Hahn’s #17 led lap #1 of the Avid Realty IMCA Sportmod A Main with Randy Fox’s 09X, the 19X of John Allensworth and Hayden Hillgartner’s 5. Hillgartner passed Allensworth on lap 3 to grab third. Jacob Swanson joined the top 4 on lap 5 in the 31S and got by Hillgartner for third 2 laps later. Hillgartner got back by Swanson the next circuit to retake third place. Hillgartner continued to move forward and advanced to second place with 9 circuits remaining. 7 laps were left when Cole Wayman put the V18W into fourth place. 2 laps later Fox slowed rapidly on the back stretch, causing Wayman to hit him from behind and sending Fox spinning into the infield. That moved Wayman up to third and Adam Vrbka’s 7V into fourth. With 3 to go Swanson spun to a stop at the bottom of turn 3, collecting the 22 of Matt Andrews and the yellow flag was brought out. Hillgartner went inside the cone on the restart and was assessed a one position penalty but the racing continued. Hillgartner got past Hahn with 2 to go and crossed the start/finish line first but the penalty moved him back to second in the results. Hahn was awarded the victory with Hillgartner second, Wayman third and Vrbka fourth.
Mary has been a bit of a stranger to the high banks of Eagle Raceway lately, and when I mentioned it to her she said “It’s been 2 years since my last win here I think. Coming into tonight we weren’t expecting anything really. We were going to come here just to test and tune. In hot laps we weren’t great, then before the heat we threw the kitchen sink at it and ended up winning. We ended up starting front row of the feature and ended up winning it.” Mary’s sponsors include 6 to 6 Auto, Chad Bornemeyer Trucking and Jared Baily Photography.
Lap 1 of the Nebraska’s Best Lawn and Landscape IMCA Modified Feature had Tyler Harr’s 21T out front with Aaron Pella second in the 3A, Dustin Andersen’s 8A third and the 8C of Chad Andersen fourth. Dustin Andersen passed Pella on lap 2 and took over the top spot after 1 more lap as Chad Andersen moved up to third and Bob Zoubek put the 5S into fourth. Chad Andersen moved past Harr on lap 6 to grab second place. Zoubek also passed Harr 3 laps later to move up to third. Shawn Harker joined the top 4 with 10 circuits left, putting the #40 into fourth. Harr spun out at the bottom of turn 4 with 3 to go for a caution. Dustin Andersen pulled away on the restart, making your top 4 were Dustin Andersen, Chad Andersen, Zoubek and Harker.
This was Dustin’s first victory at Eagle Raceway this season. “It always helps starting outside the second row. The car was really on point tonight; we had a good hot rod. That one restart had me worried with Chad restarting second. I knew I had to just bomb it in there in one on the cushion and hope he didn’t slide me. Actually, it worked out pretty good. We took off from there and didn’t see him. We were in clean air, I hit my marks and finished it off strong. I want to thank everybody that helps with the car. My crew; Pat, Ryan and Jim. Without them all we wouldn’t be able to do this.” Dustin’s sponsors include Flat Foot Trucking, Nebraska’s Best Lawn and Landscape, BBR Suspensions, Neon Clean Bins, Legendscapes and Murato Company.
Your top 4 after 1 circuit in the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock Main Event were the 76H of Jason Hansen, Robert Salts in the 10-4, Matt Rotschafer in the 14R and Dillon Richards’ 24R. Richards jumped up to second on lap 2 with Rotschafer third and Kyle Gannon fourth in the 66G. Rotschafer spun in turn 4 on lap 4, collecting Salts. At that point it was Hansen, Richards, Gannon and the 3N of Neil Pella. Richards took advantage of the restart to grab the lead with Hansen second, Pella third and the 69 of Kenny Roberts fourth. Pella and Roberts both moved up one spot to second and third respectively the following lap. Brad Schreiner passed Gannon the next time around to put the #10 into fourth. Pella slowed on lap 6 with a flat right rear tire for a caution. That moved Roberts to second, Schreiner to third and Hansen back up to fourth. Gannon passed Hansen on the restart to regain the fourth position. Trenton Dowty moved around Gannon the next circuit to move the 53T up to fourth and advanced to third the next time around. 1 more lap was in the books when Dowty passed Roberts for second and started to close on Richards. The two of them battled for the lead for several laps. A huge pileup in turn 1 with 7 to go lit the yellow lights in the corners although all cars involved kept going. Dowty made a significant effort to pass Richards to no avail as Richards held him off for the win. Dowty was second, Roberts finished third and Schreiner came home in fourth place.
Richards maintained his perfect 7 for 7 at Eagle Raceway this season and upped his 2025 overall record to 29 wins this year after having won at Beatrice Speedway the night before. It also kept him atop the national IMCA Hobby Stock points race. I told him that he really got a jump on lap 1, moving up 8 spots from his 12th starting position. He replied “I got the lead on the third lap because everyone left the top open for me. You’d think they would learn, but every time they leave the top open for me. This is 7 in a row here, heats and feature wins. I’m waiting for Roger to put a bounty on me or something.” I told him that Roger would never do that because that just leads to drivers purposely taking out the bounty driver, and he stated “I understand that! That’s why I don’t want to have one on me.”
Dillon’s sponsors include Koozer Painting, Fester’s Bait and Tackle, Swift Racing Springs, S & L Trenching, Noonan Industries LLC, Multi Fire Plug Wires, Aero Wheels, Integra Shocks, Backspin Entertainment, Van’s Waterproofing, Toy Scout, Nelson Tree Service, Cat’s Fireworks, Seven2Carts, Epp Farms, Wiring Solutions, Precision Auto Tune Inc., Neapco, In Memory of Jr Craig, In Memory of Tom Miller, Troy Cepak, Jet Racing, Extreme Motorsports, Schafer’s Oil, Schoenfeld Headers, Inline Healing, 4G’s Powder Coating and Freese Farms.
Last up for their A Feature were the Nebraska Septic IMCA Racesaver Sprint Cars. Billy Alley’s #11 led the initial lap with Trefer Waller second in the 32, Gunnar Pike put the #25 into third with the 63 of Jack Thomas’ 63 fourth. Thomas passed Pike for third on lap 2. Cameron Thompson looped the 2T on the front stretch on lap 4 to bring out the Choose Cone. The restart lineup was Alley, Waller, the 5 of Stu Snyder and Thomas. Thomas regained third place on the restart. Michalob Voeltz had the top wing of the 23V flip backwards the next lap, bringing out the caution. The lineup at the choose cone saw Alley, Waller, Snyder and Thomas the top 4. Thomas took advantage of the restart to jump up to second as Pike regained fourth. Alley jumped out to a big lead on the restart, but Thomas caught up to him and grabbed the lead on lap 13. Snyder moved back up to fourth 2 laps later. Trevor Grossenbacher climbed the wall in turn 1 with 8 laps left and came to a rest on all 4 tires in turn 2. He was pushed back to his pit. 6 to go saw Waller pass Alley for second place and then get past Thomas for the lead after 1 more circuit. Snyder also passed Alley in the closing laps to move up to the third spot. Waller stretched his lead to a straightaway for the win. Thomas was second, Snyder third and Alley held on for fourth.
This was Waller’s first win at Eagle Raceway, but he has been racing sprints for several years. He related “This is our first full season here at Eagle, but I’ve had several wins at I-90 in the past few years. We ran maybe 1 show a year here 2 or 3 years ago but we didn’t really feel good, so we went back up north and raced there. We raced at I-90 for 4 or 5 years and won the championship there in 2020. We decided to do something different and come down and play with these guys and it’s working for now. It was 8 to go at the last caution and I saw Stu stick his nose underneath me in turn 3 and I thought to myself ‘He should have slid up’ but then the caution came out right after that. He stuck it and didn’t slide up into me so I figured I’d better search around to see what’s going on. As soon as I moved down, I found I could run anywhere; middle or the bottom and it was lights out! The car was completely stuck.” Trefer’s sponsors include Turp’s Automotive, Home Town Repair, Sandhill Equipment, Drueke Trucking, Jeffres Trucking, New Holland Agriculture and Wyfels Hybrids.
Next Saturday is Freedom Fest, presented by Avid Realty, A1 Iron and Pepsi.
This is my favorite night of the season, thanks to a FABULOUS fireworks show once the racing concludes.
All 5 IMCA Classes will be competing including the A1 Iron IMCA Stock Cars Avid Realty Sportmods, Nebraska’s Best Lawn and Landscape Modifieds, Valentino’s Hobby Stocks and Nebraska Septic Sprint Cars.
