Stormy Scott emerges victorious at Lucas Oil Speedway

By Lyndal Scranton (Wheatland, MO) -- The 9th annual USMTS Slick Mist Show-Me Shootout Presented by Foley Equipment was a classic Saturday night at Lucas Oil Speedway with Stormy Scott emerging the winner of the $3,000 feature.

Scott's twin brother Johnny Scott was second and Lucas Oil Speedway Pitts Homes USRA Modified 2018 track points leader Darron Fuqua settled for third after leading the first 34 laps and dueling three and sometimes four-wide as the fans stood and cheered.

Stormy Scott, of Las Cruces, New Mexico, passed Fuqua coming to the flag stand to complete 35 after Fuqua had held on by literally inches the four previous laps. Rodney Sanders, who had been a part of that epic battle, wound up fourth.

"I knew if I could get by 20 (Sanders) and try to get a little bit of clean air, that I could get by (Fuqua)," Scott said. "I got by him and I look over and seen Johnny. I basically knew the line I was running, he was down a lot lower than me and I just couldn't go that good down there.

"I had to basically hit my line perfect every lap and keep it straight as smooth as I could and luckily held him off. Right as I went across the checkered flag, the right rear tire blew out."

Fuqua, of Mayetta, Kansas, set sail from the outside of row one and set a blistering pace, opening a 10-car-length lead by the midpoint of the 40-lapper.

Meanwhile, Sanders worked way past Jake O'Neil and into second as Fuqua sliced through lapped traffic with Stormy Scott in third and Johnny Scott fourth.

O'Neil spun in turn two on lap 27, while running fifth, to bring out a caution and wipe away Fuqua's sizable lead.

That set up a battle between the top four as Fuqua, running the high line the entire race, wasn't quite able to pull off.

"We could have won if we didn't have that yellow, but these guys were so much better than I was at the end of the race," Fuqua said. "The top got to where it was about nothing, getting real thin. I just didn't quite have enough tonight, but I'm real happy to run third against these boys. There was a lot of good cars behind me."

Johnny Scott, who won the Show-Me Shootout in 2015, said he took little consolation in finishing second to his brother.

"Not really. I'd like to have beat him, but it was a good run for our team," Johnny Scott said. "The cars have been awesome all year long. We've had a heck of a year. We had a good run and we'll see if we can keep knocking these top-fives off and maybe pull this championship off."

It was role reversal from 2015 when Johnny Scott muscled his way past Stormy for that year's Slick Mist Show-Me Shootout win.

"I've never won a USMTS show here," Stormy Scott said. "I've won one local show here, last year, and definitely have been wanting to get a win here. It can't get much better than this."

Jackson all way for B-Mod win: Kris Jackson led all 20 laps to earn his fifth Ozark Golf Cars USRA B-Mod victory of the Lucas Oil Speedway.

Jackson make it three in a row and held off ultra-consistent season points leader JC Morton for the win with Taylor Moore third.

Morton, who clicked off his fifth straight top-five, had one more chance after a lap 16-caution. But the USRA B-Mod national points leader had a clean restart and drove away for his 17 USRA victory in 31 starts.

But Jackson said he didn't mind seeing the caution. Though it wiped out a considerable lead, Jackson said it meant he didn't have to worry about navigating lapped cars as he was about to catch a gaggle of them.

"I was dreading peeking my nose in that lapped traffic. They were racing really hard, side by side," Jackson said. "I was really dreading that. I was glad to see the caution. Then again, I had Taylor Moore and JC right behind me and I knew if there was fast lane out there, they were going to find it.

"But being first up after the track being tilled, it was wide-open in the turns. It was a horsepower track and I have good horsepower. I have to thank Jim Ruble."

Womack grabs Street Stocks triumph: Danny Womack of Spiro, Oklahoma pass race-long leader Brian Schutt with six laps to go and went on to win the Big O Tires Street Stocks feature.

Womack's first victory of the Lucas Oil Speedway season in his first appearance at the track was by a car length over Schutt with James Flood right behind in third.

"These cars are probably some of the best around," Womack said, noting he wanted to come and prepare for October's Big Buck 50 Presented by Whitetail Trophy Hunt.

Schutt settled for his fifth runner-up finish of the season after a season-opening feature win.
