Carson McCarl – Maiden 360 Voyage!

(Bill W) September 14, 2011 – Carson McCarl raced a 360 for the first time at a track he had never run last Saturday night and the results were good. He won his heat and was competitive in the UMSS feature at the Cedar Lake Speedway near New Richmond, Wisconsin. A tag of the turn two wall was the only downfall of an otherwise great night.

The Altoona, Iowa driver started on the pole of his heat race and drove away to take the checkers in his first official 360 action. “It was a fast race,” says Carson of the heat. “It was pretty heavy still and I was able to start on the pole. I got the jump and got the lead. I went to the top and went for a ride. They said I won by a straightaway.”

He took a liking to the banked 3/8-mile oval right away. “It was a lot of fun,” he says. “It got slick for the feature, and it was good experience. I’ve never got to drive on a track like that.”

Starting fifth in the main event, Carson was shuffled back a bit. “We didn’t get a good start,” he says. “I got pinched off on the bottom, and a couple of guys got around me. I was back in eighth for a restart.”

He thought he had something on the restart and saw an opening. “I went to the top and the three guys in front of me went to the bottom,” says Carson. “I had an awesome run. I put it to the floor and got off in the slick in two. A guy slid up and tagged me, and I smacked the wall.”

Carson’s father Terry had warned him about the wall. “He’s always liked that track,” says Carson. “He warned me about the wall coming out of turn two, but ‘whoops’. It was just a racing deal. I flattened the left front and broke the Jacob’s ladder too. I went to the work area about five times after that before we got the Jacob’s ladder fixed. By then, it was too late and we ran out of time.”

Carson passed several drivers towards the end of the race and the result was a twelfth place finish. “It was fun. I have to thank Deanfield Farms, Aaron Berryhill and AmericashAdvance.com for providing the motor,” says Carson. “I could notice the difference in hot laps and the heat, but once it slicked off, I felt comfortable with it.”
