Cox And Peery Dominate April 2nd Event At CGS; M. Ashley And Mayden Score Electric Wins
Cottage Grove, Oregon- Cottage Grove Speedway roared back to life on Saturday, April 2nd. The famed ¼-mile clay oval hosted its second race in 2022. Four classes were on tap, including three Speedway Motors IMCA Weekly Racing program divisions. They included the Todd’s Auto Body Limited Sprints, IMCA Modifieds, Royalty Core IMCA Northern SportMods, and Mach-1 Racing Solutions IMCA Sport Compacts.
The Todd’s Auto Body Limited Sprints witnessed Kinzer Cox conquer the field. The Cottage Grove native obtained the top place position on the opening green flag. Cox would receive a brief amount of pressure but not enough to cause panic.
One caution would be the only thing to slow the contest down. On the restart, Kinzer resumed his dominance. Kinzer Cox would collect his first win of 2022 and became the second different winner in two races in the Todd’s Auto Body Limited Sprints. Shady Cove traveler David Marble posted a respectable second over third finishing Axel Oudman from Stanwood, Washington. Roseburg’s Jake Waddell posted a fourth, with fifth going to Brandon Governor of Eagle Point.
The IMCA Modifieds returned for their second contest of the current campaign. Springfield’s John Player blazed the trail in the first few laps before Jake Mayden overtook him on the third circuit. Fellow Springfield chauffeur of Mayden luckily obtained first place before the first caution of the feature.
Six total cautions occurred throughout the main event. So naturally, this puts a heavy emphasis on restarts. Mayden retained the lead. However, he did have to deal with a charging Collen Winebarger. Winebarger of Corbett was unable to get around Jake due to the long green flag runs not developing.
But he would have an opportunity on the final green flag. Winebarger, accompanied by Albany’s Bricen James, got onto the heels of Jake Mayden. Eventually, the fight was narrowed down to just Collen, working on the low line, and a high-flying Mayden.
The victory was decided on the final circuit, with Jake Mayden holding on by a mere 0.176 seconds. It is Mayden’s first triumph at Cottage Grove Speedway, in KMJ Performance Oregon State, and Shaw Race Cars Western Region competition this year.
Collen Winebarger was a respectable second, with Bricen James settling for third. Cottage Grove’s Curtis Towns, running the Frank Brewer-fielded entry, was fourth and claiming fifth would be Paul Culp of Creswell.
In the Royalty Core IMCA Northern SportMod main event, Ray Bloom, from Creswell, took control of first place on the initial green. Yreka, California teenager Ryan Peery would make a pass on Bloom only for the yellow to come back out, handing the lead back to Ray.
However, on lap seven and shortly after a restart, Peery surged past Ray Bloom to obtain the lead. After that, the only thing to slow the young man down was a lap nine caution.
When the field got back up to speed, it would be clean sailing the rest of the distance, with Ryan dominating the remaining laps.
Ryan Peery now has four wins to his credit on the 2022 calendar in the three different states, but this is his first in KMJ Performance Oregon State and CGS action. His most recent victory was on March 26th at Diamond Mountain Speedway in Susanville, California.
The brothers Sanders, both from Brookings, were second and third, with week one victor Matt the runner-up and Isaac behind him. Of Coburg and racing for car owner Mike Cummins, Kevin Williamson placed fourth, while Ray Bloom ended his evening fifth.
Lastly, the Mach-1 Racing Solutions IMCA Sport Compacts had a thriller of a main event for their 2022 debut. Ryan Dickenson, from Roseburg, paced the field for quite some time.
It was a caution plagued affair with seven total stoppages, including one red flag incident.
Dickenson was overtaken on the eighth circuit by Tiffany Towns. Towns, from Cottage Grove, had to deal with several restarts once in front and a quick Jack Vicari. The Eugene racer of Vicari was unable to gain enough momentum to mount a pass on Tiffany due to so many stoppages.
Unfortunately, the two front runners got together on the white flag lap. Both contenders would have to go to the rear resulting in a green-white-checkered finish and Ryan Dickenson back in P1. When cars got back up to speed, a fight for the lead once more was underway.
Jasper’s Madilynn Ashley rose to the occasion and swept past Dickenson coming to the white flag. Ashley secured first place and held on to pick up a win and become the first Lady Eagle racer to win in KMJ Performance Oregon State competition this season.
Cottage Grove veteran Chris Pierce, racing for car owner Randy Kuhl, rallied to finish second over third finishing Ryan Dickenson. Bruce Miller of Kellogg hit the line fourth while Tiffany Towns recovered to finish fifth.
Cottage Grove Speedway returns to racing on Saturday, April 9th, for round three of the new year. 360 Sprints, IMCA Modifieds, Late Models, and Street Stocks will all be on hand for action. For more information, log on to www.cottagegrovespeedway.com.
