Colby Copeland Becomes First Repeat Winner Of Speedweek Northwest 2021; Earns Victory In Round Four At Cottage Grove
Cottage Grove, Oregon- After a day off, the cars and stars of the Western Sprint Tour’s Speedweek Northwest resumed their racing ways on Friday, July 16th. Stop four of the series brought the race teams to Cottage Grove Speedway for the first of two consecutive nights. Thirty teams and drivers were in attendance for the event representing the American states of Oregon, Washington, California, Idaho, Indiana, and the Canadian province of British Columbia.
The main event was an incident-filled affair. However, despite the nine stoppages, including one for a red flag, one thing remained the same, Colby Copeland was in dominant form. The Roseville, California racer obtained the point on completing lap one and did not feel any pressure the rest of the way.
Copeland, racing for car owners Jim and Annette Van Lare, was masterful in his maneuvering in open race track and lapped traffic. Colby was the first car to the finish line to become the first repeat winner of Speedweek Northwest 2021 and earned his first career Cottage Grove Speedway triumph. It is his fifth overall series win for Colby Copeland in tour history and now sixth all-time on the list tied with Travis Rilat and Brad Furr.
Jacksonville teenager Tanner Holmes for the second straight round, ended the evening second over third, finishing Trey Starks, from Puyallup, Washington. Jodie Robinson of Roseville, California, was credited with fourth while fifth place went to Harrisburg’s Tyler Thompson after being involved in a lap eight caution. Cottage Grove native Kinzer Cox passed the most cars throughout the race to earn the Rocket Engines Hard Charger Award.
Pittsboro, Indiana traveler Brinton Marvel, racing for car owner Blake Cook, was quickest in time trials. Heat race wins were picked up by Tanner Holmes, Justyn Cox of West Sacramento, California in the Doug and Kathy Rutz ride, Redding, California youngster Max MIttry, and Chase Goetz from Snohomish, Washington. Colby Copeland won the trophy dash to earn the inside front-row starting position, and Kinzer Cox was victorious in the B Main.
Speedweek Northwest will wrap things up on Saturday, July 17th, for the final round of competition. The series will remain at Cottage Grove Speedway, where they will all battle it out for $5,000 to the winner of the main event.
