Cottage Grove, Oregon- The first of two straight nights of action at Cottage Grove Speedway kicked off on Friday, June 18th.
Three divisions were on the card, including one Speedway Motors IMCA Weekly Racing program class. They included the return of the Interstate Sprint Car Series, IMCA Modifieds, and Senior Sprints.

Shane Forte of Junction City was the early leader of the Interstate Sprint Car Series main event. However, Forte would be locked in a fierce battle with Cottage Grove’s Kinzer Cox. The two would be neck and neck at the line for several circuits.

There were some occasions in which Forte created space from the rest of the field, but two stoppages kept the pack all tightly knit.
Shortly after a restart, on lap twelve, Cox made a bonsai move to capture the lead. In the Brian Crockett owned entry, Kinzer had to deal with one additional restart but managed to master it.

Kinzer Cox scored his second straight win at Cottage Grove Speedway in 2021 but is his first in ISCS competition. It is his second triumph with series but the first time since June of 2018 that he has tamed the field.

Medford’s Camden Robustelli, in the T.J. Winningham car, was the runner-up, with Shane Forte ending the race third. The rest of the top five was made up of Dave Hibbard, from Medford, and Roseburg native Kyle Alberding.

For the IMCA Modifieds, Paul Rea pounced to the lead on the opening start. The Eugene veteran of Rea inhabited the position until lap three, when Derick Young made his way into first place. Young, from the Eastern Oregon town of Hines, received some pressure just after the halfway mark.

Jeffrey Hudson, racing for car owner Don Roemer, got around Derick Young on lap fourteen. Young kept his composure and retrieved the coveted top spot on the sixteenth circuit.
Derick remained there, the balance of the distance to earn the victory.

It is Derick Young’s first win at Cottage Grove since April 27th, 2019. He is the sixth winner in nine shows and the newest name on the win chart in KMJ Performance Oregon State and Shaw Race Cars Western Region competition.

Cottage Grove’s Curtis Towns and Aaron Sheelar, from Springfield, were second and third. Bricen James of Albany got fourth, followed by Albany native Matthew Drager behind him, in fifth.

The Senior Sprints had their second race of the current campaign. Just like in round one, Nate Ellertson would lead every single lap in the main. The Cottage Grove driver is a perfect two for two in Senior Sprint action. Richie Brown, now residing in Redmond and driving for Shane Forte, was second.

Cottage Grove Speedway returns to racing on Saturday, June 19th, for Dad’s Night Out. All dads get into the races for FREE. Classes in the competition include the Wingless Sprint Series, IMCA Modifieds, Royalty Core IMCA Northern Sport Mods, and IMCA Sport Compacts.
