Alberding, Rea, Luckman, Smith, Osborne, And R. Ashley Collect September 19th Wins At CGS

Cottage Grove, Oregon- Cottage Grove Speedway returned to racing on Saturday, September 19th after a week off. Despite dense smoke, poor air quality, and several rain showers earlier in the week, the historical ¼-mile managed to get the whole entire night in. Classes in competition were Limited Sprints, IMCA Modifieds, Late Models, IMCA Sport Mods, Street Stocks, and IMCA Sport Compacts.

Anissa Curtice set the tone for much of the Limited Sprint feature. The Eureka, California teenager paced the field for the first fifteen laps of the race. Shortly after a restart she was overtaken by Kyle Alberding. Alberding, of Winston, pulled away from the rest of the field to score his second win on dirt in his last three starts.

Anissa Curtice was a respectable second followed by Grants Pass’ Jared Hood, in third. Ricky Ashley, of Thurston, placed fourth with the top five being rounded up by Justin Lemon, from Cottage Grove, in fifth.

The IMCA Modified main event was a caution-free affair. Paul Rea, of Eugene, snatched the lead on the opening start. Hot from his win at Skagit Speedway on September 17th, Rea managed to keep his mount in front of the rest of the pack to get the win. It is the first time he has won at CGS in approximately twenty years and the first occasion he has done so in the Modified division.

Jake Mayden, of Springfield, rallied late in the closing laps but could not quite put himself in a position to overtake the leader. Mayden was recorded in second while third place went to John Campos, from Keizer. Corbett’s Collen Winebarger posted a fourth-place finish over fifth finishing Jasper driver, Eric Ashley.

Bandon’s Braden Fugate led the charge in the Late Model feature for much of the time. The teenager stayed out front until he was passed on lap sixteen. Preston Luckman was the one to slip past Fugate. Luckman, of Coos Bay, dominated the balance of the distance to win his second Late Model feature at Cottage Grove.

Braden Fugate did finish a respectable second while behind him, in third, was Rob Campos, from Scio. Eugene’s Chuck Christian ended the night fourth while Springfield racer Ryan Ronning got fifth.

The IMCA Sport Mods boasted the biggest car count of the night with over twenty entries signing in on the registration sheet. Matt Sanders took control of the lead on the opening start. The Brookings driver would be tracked down and overtaken by Eugene’s Hunter Bloom, on lap ten, only for Sanders to reclaim the position on the following circuit.

Matt Sanders continued to lead until mechanical problems brought him to a halt on lap fifteen. That would hand the lead over to Shawn Hand, of Springfield. After the restart Brian Smith moved past Hand to take over the coveted position. Smith, of Albany, went on to score the victory in his first career Sport Mod start.

Isaac Sanders, also from Brookings, was second while scored in third would be Shawn Hand. Veneta’s Gavin Ropchan, who started in the final row of both the A and B Mains, rallied to a fourth-place result while Springfield veteran Mike DeSilva, who also came from the B, was fifth. Daniel Ray, of Springfield, was victorious in the consolation feature.

In the Street Stock ranks, Steve Dubisar commanded the field in the first half of the race. Dubisar, of Coquille, lost the lead in lapped traffic on lap eleven. Creswell’s Graig Osborne was the driver to grab first place and there he remained the rest of the way in the yellow-free event. Osborne has three wins at Cottage Grove this season.

Steve Dubisar hit the finish line in second over third finishing Adam Applebee, of Eugene. Coos Bay’s Dyllan Siewell placed fourth with fifth going to Michael Hollingsworth, from Creswell.

The IMCA Sport Compacts also witnessed no stoppages. Ricky Ashley, once more pulling double duty and driving the Randy Kuhl fielded entry, seized the lead on the initial start. He would build a sizeable lead at one point but was caught in the last few laps. Despite getting reeled in, Ashley managed his composure and would score his fourth win of 2020 in the Sport Compacts.

Kerry Cooper, of Cottage Grove, was a close second with his late race rally while third place was credited to Roseburg’s Seth Christian. Barry Cannon, from Dexter and utilizing Kerry Cooper’s back up car, wound up fourth while fellow Dexter driver, Bradley Martin, ended the night fifth.

Cottage Grove Speedway will take the week off before they return to action on Friday, October 2nd for Karts followed by the ¼-mile on Saturday, the 3rd. A whopping seven divisions will be on the card including Limited Sprints, IMCA Modifieds, Late Models, IMCA Sport Mods, Street Stocks, IMCA Sport Compacts, and Dwarf Cars.
