Cottage Grove, Oregon- Cottage Grove Speedway rounded up their Labor Day Weekend on Sunday, September 6th. The same six divisions from the previous night returned to the ¼-mile clay oval. Those classes included the Limited Sprints, IMCA Modifieds, Late Models, IMCA Sport Mods, Street Stocks, and IMCA Sport Compacts.
In the Limited Sprint division, it was Ricky Ashley parkin his mount in victory lane. It is the first time that the Thurston driver has won in the Sprints this season.
Grants Pass newcomer, R.J. McGahuey, was an impressive runner-up over third finishing Tyrell Mead, of Winston and racing for car owner Brian Crockett. The rest of the top five placers were made up of Anissa Curtice, from Eureka, California, and Cooper Desbiens, of Sutherlin.
A good turnout of IMCA Modifieds made the journey on Sunday. Eugene’s Jesse Williamson took care of business to become the newest winner in the class. Eston Whisler, of Otis, was second with Springfield chauffeur Jake Mayden in third. Keizer’s John Campos got fourth while Nick Bessette, from Battle Ground, Washington, completed the top five, in fifth. Jasper driver Eric Ashley won the consolation race.
Jimmy Whisler doubled up his winning total in the Late Model ranks. The Otis racer now has three consecutive victories at Cottage Grove and four in total.
Sweet Home’s Kye Frick placed second while Brian Smith, from Lebanon and racing the Jerry and Mandee Casey owned machine, got third. Toledo traveler Jordan Wright was fourth over fifth finishing Rob Campos, of Scio.
A whole bunch of IMCA Sport Mods was also in the pit area for the final night of the weekend. Despite finishing a close runner-up the night before, Springfield’s Daniel Ray hit pay dirt for the first time in over three years. Aaron Bloom, of Cottage Grove, ended the race second while behind him, in third, was Isaac Sanders, from Brookings. Yreka, California youngster Riley Peery put in a fourth-place effort over fifth finishing Matt Sanders, also of Brookings.
Gold Hills pilot Joby Shields was victorious in the B Main.
In the Street Stocks, the division witnessed the first repeat winner of 2020. That individual would be Graig Osborne, of Creswell, as he scored his second CGS of the season. Fellow Creswell racer Garrett Barth ended his weekend second followed by Blake Lehman, from Terrebonne, in third. Redmond’s Dillon Solum was fourth while Jake Mayden, doing double duty, got fifth.
Rounding up the weekend was the IMCA Sport Compacts.
Ricky Ashley, racing in two divisions and wheeling the Randy Kuhl owned car, broke the tie for most wins in the class.
It is Ashley’s third Sport Compact win of the year. Cottage Grove’s Kerry Cooper managed to collect second with third credited to Brad Moffett, of Eugene. Ryan Dickensen, of Roseburg, and Union Gap driver Michael Kennerly, were fourth and fifth.
Cottage Grove Speedway is scheduled to be sark this weekend with racing returning on Saturday, September 19th.
