Cottage Grove, Oregon- On Saturday, August 1st, Cottage Grove Speedway returned to action for the third event of the 2020 season. It would be another evening where over one-hundred entries inhabited the pit area with six divisions on hand. Limited Sprints, IMCA Modifieds, Late Models, IMCA Sport Mods, Street Stocks, and IMCA Sport Compacts were all on the card.

In the Limited Sprint main event, Kinzer Cox worked his way to the lead on lap eight. There Cox remained in the position despite having to deal with four restarts. It is the second straight feature that the Cottage Grove native has won. Central Point’s Jake Wheeler was second with Shane Forte, of Junction City, in third. Steven Snawder, from Roseburg, got fourth, over fifth finishing Harrisburg chauffer Tyler Thompson.

The IMCA Modified feature was a nonstop affair. It took eleven laps for Collen Winebarger to seize the top spot. Winebarger, of Corbett, went on to be the third different winner in as many races at CGS. Collen now has six wins at five different racetracks in three separate states. It is also the second straight weekend that Winebarger has won for car owner Joey Tanner. Otis youngster Eston Whisler was an impressive runner-up while finishing behind him, in third, would be Chad Grove, of Bend. Albany’s Bricen James wound up fourth with Yreka, California veteran Travis Peery getting fifth.

In the Late Models, Jimmy Whisler made a late-race pass to get into first place. Hailing from the coastal city of Otis, Whisler, got to the front of the field on lap twenty-one and refused to slow down from there. Whisler went on to become the third different Late Model winner in three races. Lebanon’s McLain Beaudoin, who led much of the race, was credited with second but was unfortunately disqualified afterward. Chad Groves, doing double duty and racing for car owners Jerry and Mandee Casey, would be scored second with Medford veteran Mark Wauge placing third. Kye Frick, from Sweet Home, ending the evening in fourth and Brian Smith, of Lebanon and racing for car owners Jerry and Mandee Casey, got fifth.

Jorddon Braaten made his first start at “The Grove” in 2020 and would see successful results. The Central Point IMCA Sport Mod pilot took possession of first place on the seventh circuit. Braaten went on to dominate the balance of the distance on his way to winning his fifth race of the campaign at his second different track. He also is the third different winner in as many nights at Cottage Grove. Roseburg’s Doug Coffman was the runner-up while third place went to David Schmidt, also of Roseburg. Braedon Hand, from Cottage Grove and racing for the Brookings based Sanders Racing Team, crossed the wire fourth over Eugene’s Art Hiatt, in fifth.

In Street Stock action, Dakota Goddard took control of the lead at the midway point of the main event. The Albany racer kept all challengers at bay the rest of the way to win at Cottage Grove. That also makes three different victors in the Street Stock division.
Portland’s Sean Cronk got second over Garrett Barth, from Creswell, in third. The rest of the top five would comprise of Portland veteran Jody Tanner and Phil Lovorn, of Albany, in fourth and fifth.

Lastly, in the IMCA Sport Compacts, the theme of another new face in victory lane would be kept up. The race would be a thriller with several lead changes through the course of the twenty-lap journey. In the end, Dexter’s Barry Cannon would make the decisive move to the front on lap seventeen. Cannon held on in the final few laps to win for the first time this year at Cottage Grove.
