Cottage Grove, Oregon- Despite nearly nine months off from the last completed race, Cottage Grove Speedway kicked off their 2020 race season on Independence Day, Saturday, July 4th. The ¼-mile clay oval facility initially was slated to get the engines roaring back in late March but has been dormant due to COVID-19. The race featured Limited Sprints, IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sport Mods, Late Models, Street Stocks, and IMCA Sport Compacts all in action.
Shane Forte was dominant in the Limited Sprint main event. The race started with Arlington, Washington’s Brett McGhie, out in front on the opening start. McGhie paced the field until being overtaken on lap three by Central Point veteran T.J. Winningham. On the following lap, the fourth circuit, Forte, got to the front. There the Junction City gasser remained to win his first race of the year.
Jacksonville’s Tanner Holmes was second over third finishing Steven Snawder, of Roseburg. The rest of the top five would consist of Eagle Point rising star Johnny Burke, fourth and fifth placing Tyler Driever, from Meridian, Idaho.
In the IMCA Modified ranks, John Campos took care of business. Campos, of Keizer, seized the initial lead over the rest of the field. The only things to slow him down were three stoppages, and each restart he managed to keep back all contenders. Leading the entire main event John Campos won for the first time in 2020.
Albany’s Bricen James was the runner-up while Steven Sturdevant, of Springfield, got third. Crossing the wire in fourth would be Paul Culp, now living in Creswell, and Bend’s Chad Groves, in fifth. Jake Mayden, of Springfield, was the winner of the consolation feature.
Shawn Hand was quick in the early stages of the IMCA Sport Mod race. The Springfield chauffeur led the first two trips past the flag stand before being overtaken on lap three by Art Hiatt. Hiatt, of Eugene, blazed the trail the balance of the distance despite seven yellow flag incidents slowing things down. It is Hiatt’s first win of the 2020 campaign.
Roseburg’s Doug Coffman got second with David Schmidt, also of Roseburg, behind him in third. The cousins Bloom, Aaron, from Cottage Grove, and Hunter, hailing out of Eugene, in fourth and fifth place, respectively.
In the Late Model ranks, Kye Frick was dominant in the first half of the race. Frick, from Sweet Home, was the leader from lap one until losing the coveted top spot on lap thirteen. The driver to get by him was Chad Groves. Groves, doing double duty and racing the Jerry and Mandee Casey owned Late Model entry, stayed out front for the duration to earn his first trophy of the year.
Salem’s Doug Elkins ended his evening second while Thomas Hunziker, of Bend, captured third. Rob Campos, from Scio, placed fourth, followed by fifth finishing B.J. Donofrio, also of Salem.
In the Street Stocks, Eugene’s Adam Applebee started the feature as the leader. He would be overtaken on lap two by Chris West, of Woodland, Washington, on the second lap. Eagle Creek racer Donald Schott passed West on the seventh circuit only for West to reclaim the lead on lap eight. West stayed ahead of the rest of the competition to park his mount in victory lane.
Graig Osborne, of Creswell, rallied to a second-place result with Donald Schott behind him in third. Creswell’s Garrett Barth managed to put together a fourth-place effort with Forest Grove traveler, Joey Tardio ending his night fifth.
Lastly, was the IMCA Sport Compacts. This class was formerly known as the Hornet division. Chloe Van Sandt worked her way to the lead on the initial start and stayed there till lap three when Barry Cannon made his way past her. Of Dexter, Cannon remained the leader until the thirteenth trip to the line when Cole Trissell got passed him. Trissell, of Springfield, went unchallenged the rest of the way to win the main event.
Chris Lemon, of Sutherlin, got second while Chloe Van Sandt was third. Roseburg racer Bart Pulse and Melissa Abston, of Cottage Grove, were fourth and fifth.
