Cottage Grove, Oregon- After a thrilling night of racing on Monday the Wild West Modified Shootout remained at Cottage Grove Speedway for the second straight evening on Tuesday, June 25th. It marked the fifth race of 2019 schedule for the tour and boasted a car count of forty-five entries. Teams from the states of Oregon, Washington, California, Nevada, and North Dakota were represented as well as the Canadian province of British Columbia.

In the feature CGS veteran Gus Cooper motored his way to the front of the field in the opening laps. Cooper, of Creswell, held on to the top spot until getting passed on lap four by Jake Mayden. Mayden, from Springfield, showed the way for several circuits himself.

The lone stoppage of the race was a caution on lap nine bunching the field right up. Shortly after the restart Corbett’s Collen Winebarger maneuvered around Mayden take over the role as the trailblazer for the field. Winebarger set a torrid pace in open racetrack but once again faced some thick lapped traffic.

In almost a carbon copy of the night previous while Winebarger dealt with the tail end of the field eventually allowing Kellen Chadwick to begin to bear down some pressure on the leader. But this time Winebarger managed to keep Chadwick, from Oakley, California, in check to win his third race of the week and his WWMS win at Cottage Grove. It is the sixth all-time win of Winebarger’s career with the series bringing him tied with Alex Stanford for second on the all-time tour win list.

Kellen Chadwick was a close second while Jake Mayden ended his evening in third. Albany’s Bricen James collected a fourth while posting a fifth-place result would be Gus Cooper.

Portland’s Joey Tanner (racing for car owner Jimmy Whisler), Justin Duty of Mulino (filling in for Brian Thompson), and Keizer pilot John Campos were the three B Main winners. As the night before heat races were divided into six groups. Winners in the first round were Cottage Grove’s Curtis Towns, Jake Mayden, Pahrump, Nevada youngster Jake Pike, Joey Tanner, Dave Duste Jr. of Central Point, and Albany veteran Craig Hanson. In round two Aaron Sheelar of Springfield, Eugene’s Jesse Williamson, Collen Winebarger, Carl Berendsen from Antioch, California, Hines driver Derick Young, and Bricen James all collected victories.

The Wild West Modified Shootout will now trek north to Sunset Speedway Park, in Banks, on Wednesday, June 26th. Ticket prices with $13.00 for Adults and Seniors/Military/Juniors (13-17) $10.00.
