Cottage Grove, Oregon- Sunday, May 28th would be the second and final leg of the 2017 Marvin Smith Memorial Grove Classic. There would be even more cars in the pit area with all three division being swollen with very good car counts. The 360 Sprints division was back for their second straight evening while the Mohawk Metals IMCA Modifieds and Quality RV Repair Hornets returned to the ¼-mile clay oval.

Chris Schmelzle, of Colville, Washington, took advantage of his pole starting position to lead the field on the opening lap. Lap two would witness Roger Crockett make it past Schmelzle to seize first place. Crockett, of Medford and in the Roger Henderson machine, would then battle with Jason Solwold for quite some time.

Solwold, from Burlington, Washington in the Mike Anderson and Monica Bata owned mount, would obtain the lead on lap four only to lose the position to Crockett on lap eleven. Solwold would mount a late race surge grabbing the lead yet again around lap twenty-three only for Crockett to make it back around him with just mere laps to go. Roger would hold on to the victory to finally win his first Marvin Smith Memorial Grove Classic.

Jason Solwold would finish a close second with Clarksburg, California’s Justyn Cox recording a third place finish. Eugene native Kyle Miller, driving for Kady Adelman, was fourth while Robbie Price, from Cobble Hill, British Columbia, wrapped up the top five finishers in fifth.

Over thirty Mohawk Metals IMCA Modifieds turned up for the Sunday program. Springfield’s Jake Mayden would have a terrific performance in the main event. Mayden would keep all challengers in check and would hold on to win the race.

Springfield driver K.C. Scott took care of business in the Quality RV Repair Hornets. Scott would be put under considerable pressure late in the race. Dexter’s Mike Swaim would make a pass with a few laps to go and crossed the line in first but unfortunately was disqualified during the postrace inspection.
