John Duty Wins CGS Logger’s Cup; Mayden And Maricle Also Pick Up Wins

Cottage Grove, Oregon- Cottage Grove Speedway would host its biggest Late Model race of the year on Saturday June 25th in aptly named event in honor of the surrounding timber industry, the Logger’s Cup. In addition to Late Models in action there were also IMCA Modifieds and Quality RV Repair Hornets.
The Late Model main event was full of cautions. Seven yellow flags would be thrown before the halfway point but where there was some green flag action in between it would be good. Darren Coffell got to the front early in his Driving Force Graphics/Tube Shark Tube Benders/Jimsflagsales.com #46 Rocket. The Bend driver would remain there until he would get past on the tenth lap by Molalla’s John Duty.
Duty would just have to worry about the restarts with all the stoppages for most of the time. On a long green flag run he would be caught and passed by his son, Justin, on lap thirty-six only for the yellow flag to come out and give it back to John. John Duty would stay in front for the rest of the way to win his first ever Logger’s Cup. The driver of the Don Frank Flooring/Darren & Mardell Williams/Ohlins by JDR #5J Rocket would become the fifth different CGS Late Model winner in as many races.
The Don Frank Flooring/Mid Ohio Graphics/Superior Fuel Cells #15 Rocket of Justin Duty, also of Molalla, was second while third went to Corbett’s Collen Winebarger, driving his Discount Race Car Parts/Crockers Cars/GO Plumbing & Heating #S MasterSbilt. The balance of the top five was made up of the Superior Graphics/Superior Fuel Cells/Eugene Gutter Service #42 machine of Paul Culp, from Creswell in fourth, and fifth finishing Ron Brewster, from Redmond, in the Central Oregon Trucking/Driving Force Graphics #31B Rocket.
The Eastside Paving/All In Property Investments/Monty’s Racing Repair #111 X-Factor, of Portland’s Joey Tanner, was fast time of the night while John Duty won the Dot’s Trophy Shop Trophy Dash. Joey Tanner, Justin Duty, and John Duty were the three heat race winners.
In the IMCA Modifieds Pleasant Hill native Justin Austin, driving the Art Hiatt owned Point S Springfield Tire Factory/Quality RV Repair/Jack Austin Talent Management #22A entry, led the opening lap. He would be passed on the second lap by the Cam Cat Tractor/Blaylock Inc./Wadsworth Garbage Service #18R Shaw of Coquille’s Ryan Baker. Baker would get passed by Tyler Smith on lap three to make it three different leaders in three laps.
Tyler Smith, of Cottage Grove in his DeWalt Racing/Bam Carbide/S&L Photography #73 Hassey, would remain in the top spot some time before slipping back to second on the eighth lap. The driver to take the reins over the rest of the field was Springfield’s Jake Mayden. Mayden would battle for several laps with Smith but in the end Mayden would keep everyone behind him to finish first. It would be the second visit to victory lane for Mayden and the Hoppes Motorsports/Courtney Auto Repair/Eugene Gutter Service #5M Dirt Works team.
Tyler Smith managed to finish in second while Springfield’s Steven Sturdevant would place his Point S Springfield Tire Factory/KMC Wheels/Pyramid Brewery #11 X-Factor in third. Braedon Hand of Cottage Grove would end the evening fourth in the 1400 KNND AM/Vintage Inn Family Restaurant/D&D Automotive #13 Shaw and the Desert Storm/Gulf War Veterans with PTSD/Merry Maids/Interior Carpet Care #12 PCD of Redmond native B.J. Wild in fifth.
Collen Winebarger, pulling double duty and driving his Discount Race Car Parts/Crockers Cars/GO Plumbing & Heating #S Victory Circle, was fast time of the night as well as the victor in the Dot’s Trophy Shop Trophy Dash. Heat race winners were the Eugene Mortgage Brokers/Mickey’s Affordable Auto Sales/Commonwealth Financial Network #77 X-Factor of Kreg Britton from Cottage Grove, Tyler Smith, and Collen Winebarger.
Last but not least were the Quality RV Repair Hornets. Jim Simmons of Cottage Grove would set the pace early in his Bigg Dogg Recycling/Marvin Smith Auto Repair/Body Works Salon #89 Honda Prelude. Simmons stayed in front until he would battle back and forth for some time with Junction City’s Marcel Forte.
Forte would prevail on lap nine in the Junction City Muffler Shop/Twisted Bit Arena/Snap On Tools #23F entry but would get passed on the eleventh circuit by Joe Maricle. The Veneta driver would lead the rest of the way to park his More of Everything Racing Collectibles/Royal Refuse Service #11 machine in the winner’s circle for the fifth time this season. It was also Maricle’s second straight win of the season.
Jim Simmons was second and the Roseburg Honda #37 entry of Sutherlin chauffeur Bernie Bryant was third. Westfir’s Josh Corley placed his J&M Racing #7C Nissan 200SX got fourth and the Quantum Mechanics/Big B Tires/Quality RV Repair #30 Mazda Protégé of K.C. Scott, from Springfield, earned fifth.
Joe Maricle was fast time of the night and Josh Corley won the Dot’s Trophy Shop Trophy Dash. Maricle and Marcel Forte were the two heat race winners.
Cottage Grove Speedway is gearing up for a busy Independence Day weekend. It all begins on Friday July 1st with Kage Karts while Saturday the 2nd is T-Shirt Night. This means if you have a CGS T-Shirt you get into the races for just $5.00. Classes racing on Saturday are the Clark Printing Extreme Sprints, IMCA Modifieds, Street Stocks, and Quality RV Repair Hornets.
For the Kart races General Admission is FREE and Pit Passes are $10.00 and Car and Driver fees will be $35.00. The Pit Gate will open up around 4:00 PM and the Pit Meeting is at 6:00 PM with Hot Laps and Racing to follow. Times for Saturday are Pit Gates open at 2:00 PM, Front Gates 4:00, and Racing is scheduled to start around 6:30. Tickets are Adults $13.00, Juniors/Seniors $10.00, Youth (6-12) - $5.00, Family Pass $30.00, and Children 5 or under are FREE. As will happen all year long in honor of our 60th Anniversary the 60th fan through the Front Gate gets in for FREE.
Don’t forget that Independence Day, Monday July 4th, will be the place to be with both racing and fireworks. The event will be the second stop of the 2016 Speedweek Northwest schedule and features some of the best 360 Sprint Car drivers in the world.
