Inside Line Promotions – COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. (Oct. 5, 2015) – Patrick Dills accomplished each of his lofty goals during his second season in a sprint car.
Dills claimed his first career track championship at Cottage Grove Speedway and captured three feature wins among other aspirations in 2015.
“My goals at the beginning of the season were to pick up some wins, win the extreme sprints championship, finish top 10 in points in the 360s and get Rookie of the Year in the 360s,” he said. “I got third in points in the 360s and I think I got Rookie of the Year. Every single goal was made.”
Dills drove to three extreme sprints triumphs and 10 top-five finishes during the 13 features to earn the championship at the quarter-mile oval.
“Last year I felt like I got a lot of the basic fundamentals down,” he said. “We switched cars before this year and I got into a rhythm where every time I hit the track I felt like I was in control. Every time I hit the track running. It was pretty hard because to run for points you have to be consistent. It’s all about finishing. We strived to show consistency and that’s what we did.”
Dills said each of the wins was memorable in its own right.
“The first one was by default because someone got DQed,” he said. “That didn’t feel as good as the second one. I lapped up to fourth and won by almost 10 seconds. Winning on the championship night topped the season off for me.”
Dills also had a standout season in the 360 ranks as he recorded a pair of runner-up results and three top fives at Cottage Grove Speedway to finish the season ranked third in the championship standings.
“I came close to winning a couple of times,” he said. “It seemed like the guys behind me would eat me up in lapped traffic. I gained a lot of experience during Speedweek racing with all those good drivers. I don’t think I finished inside the top 10, but when we went back for the Oregon-California Challenge in August we got two top fives. I gained a lot of confidence and that carried throughout the season for me.”
Additionally, Dills placed sixth in the Western Sprint Tour championship standings despite missing three races.
“I want to give a special thanks to my dad, my crew chief, Jake, and everyone who helped crew for me this year for working so hard and being so dedicated,” he said. “Also, a big thanks to all of my sponsors for supporting me. We had a really strong season and I can’t wait to get 2016 started.”
