Inside Line Promotions – ANTIOCH, Calif. (Sept. 14, 2015) – Jason Sides can’t get back to the Midwest quickly enough.
Sides has a long drive to make this weekend’s World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series events – Friday at Clay County Fair Speedway in Spencer, Iowa, for the Arnold Motor Supply Shootout and Saturday at Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minn., for the Clash at the Creek – after leaving California on Monday morning following a rough West Coast swing.
“Hopefully we can get on some smooth tracks this weekend,” he said. “When the car is good, I am good. When the car isn’t, I just ride it out. That’s exactly what happened the last few races.”
Sides was caught up in a crash last Wednesday at Cottage Grove Speedway in Cottage Grove, Ore., where he opened the night by qualifying 16th and finishing fifth in a heat race. Sides was battling for a top 10 during the main event when a collision resulted in a hard wreck.
“On a restart someone got on the infield berm,” he said. “Their car got up on two wheels. They had to turn it right to keep from flipping. I was slowing down and they came across in front of me. I was already to that point and I jumped their right rear, which put me into the wall and I flipped a couple of times. It killed that car.”
Sides was unable to finish the race and he was credited with a 22nd-place finish.
The team built a new car on Thursday prior to Friday’s Gold Cup opener at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, Calif., where the quarter-mile track was rough throughout the weekend.
“It was so rough and so choppy for qualifying,” he said. “These tires don’t like rough tracks.”
Sides timed in 15th in his group. He then advanced from eighth to sixth in a heat race, which relegated him to a Last Chance Showdown. Sides battled for one of the four transfer positions throughout the race before ending fifth.
He returned to Silver Dollar Speedway on Saturday, when Sides qualified 11th in his group, placed seventh in a heat and claimed fourth in the Last Chance Showdown. That locked Sides into the main event, which he finished with a 21st-place result.
The busy week wrapped up on Sunday at Antioch Speedway with Sides qualifying 19th quickest. He then scored a seventh-place result in a heat race and a sixth-place finish in the Last Chance Showdown to transfer into the back of the main event.
“It was a bit better in the feature,” he said. “When someone would slip off the bottom I could get in there, slow down, turn and get a good run off the corner. The car wasn’t that bad. But everybody was fighting for the bottom.”
Sides rallied from 24th to garner a 14th-place result, which earned him the Hard Charger Award for passing the most cars.
