Cottage Grove Speedway would host the fourth race of the 2015 Wild West Modified Shootout on Tuesday June 16th. A total of forty-three cars would be on hand representing the states of Oregon, Washington, California, Nevada, Arizona, Montana, North Dakota, Colorado, and the Canadian province of British Columbia. Some spectacular action would be put on display at the historic 1/4-mile clay oval.
Martinez, California's Troy Foulger would be the early race leader in his Southern County Lubricants/All Flow Muffler & Brake/Chuck's Wheel & Brake Service/Joe Gonsalves Photography #49 Bowers. Foulger would lose the lead on lap five to Jesse Williamson from Eugene. Williamson, in the NexGen Race Cars/Furniture Options/S.D.M.F. Customs/Double R Powdercoating #W5 NexGen, seemed to be checked out and had the race won until going off of turns three and four on lap sixteen.
Williamson would get back on the race track but forfeited the top spot to Chowchilla, California native Alex Stanford. Stanford, driving the Stanford Chopping/Golden Memorial Insurance/Susan River Reality/Borba Ranch #98 PCD, would retain the lead and did not have to worry much about lapped traffic due to several cautions taking place. But on lap twenty-eight, just before a lap twenty-nine caution, Jesse Williamson would reclaim the lead finding a way around Stanford.
Shortly after a restart the Mark's Auto Body #27 GRT by Phillips, driven by Redmond's Mark Carrell, would come out of nowhere on the bottom of the race track and seized the lead on lap thirty. Unfortunately Carrell would spin in turn two and got collected up with a few cars resulting in a premature end to his night.
Williamson would inherit the lead and with just a few laps left had to keep back some very fast race cars. He was able to get the job done as he crossed the wire the winner and became the first multi-feature victor in the 2015 Wild West Modified Shootout. It was also his third win of the year at Cottage Grove Speedway.
Williston, North Dakota drivers would finish second and third with the Dennis Peery Trucking/Susan River Reality/Winzer by Paul Cooper #6P Hughes of Travis Peery was the runner-up while Troy Heupel managed to get third in his Car Tunz/Red River Supply/Budweiser/Pro Auto Body #4T GRT. The rest of the top five would consist of fourth place finisher Alex Stanford and in fifth Albany's Craig Hanson in the Hanson Automotive Machine/1580 KGAL/James Gang Pizza/BSB Manufacturing #33C Shaw. Troy Heupel would be awarded the Klecker Knives Hardcharger award.
The Wild West Modified Shootout gets back after it on Wednesday June 17th at Sunset Speedway Park in Banks. SSP, like Cottage Grove, will be offering a $25.00 per car load special for the night. Racing is scheduled to get underway around 6:30ish. For more information log on to www.sunsetspeedwaypark.com.
