Cottage Grove Speedway would see some great racing on Saturday September 13th as the historical ¼-mile clay oval would host the first of two Championship Nights. It would be the final race of the season for the Huddle Automotive Repair 360 Sprints, Late Models, Northwest Extreme Modifieds, and Street Stocks. Good car counts would be on tap especially in the 360 Sprints and Late Models.

An opening lap tangle in the Huddle Automotive Repair 360 Sprints would see multiple cars get upside down on the front stretch taking a few cars out prematurely. On the second attempt Colin Baker of Cottage Grove would get to the front in the Tim Galloway owned Steelhouse Metal Roofing Supply/BC Motorsports/Huddle Automotive Repair/Meyers Logging/Team Dirt Dog #83 KPC.

Baker would set a rapid pace and looked to have the field covered but in the last ten laps he would receive some pressure from behind. The pressure would come from Salem’s Kyle Miller who had started dead last after the red flag due to being involved in it and sustaining some heavy damage. On the long green flag run Miller would go elbows up and cut into Baker’s sizable interval.

With four laps to go, on lap twenty-six, Kyle Miller would overtake Baker for the lead as the two pilots negotiated some heavy lapped traffic. Miller would be out in front the rest of the way to win his first Huddle Automotive Repair 360 Sprint feature in the Automotive Sheetmetal/K&S Motorsports/Machined For Speed by Craig Jensen/Gary’s Subaru Service #10 XXX and his second straight after dominating the Wingless Nationals presented by Herz Precision Parts.

Colin Baker was second, and the last car on the lead lap, while placing third would be the Huddle Automotive Repair/Steelhouse Metal Roofing Supply/Oregon West RV/Astro Titanium/Royal Flush Environmental Services #71 Lunatik Fringe of Colby Carter from Cottage Grove. The rest of the top five would be made up of Roseburg’s Nick Tomlinson in his United Rentals/T-N-T Diversified #16 Maxim in fourth and the Power Punch Performance Lubricants/Journey Built Homes/Stone Works International/Eckstine Powdercoating #4J KPC of Allison Journey from Springfield in fifth.

Britton Donahoo out of Salem would be the driver to beat early in the laps of the Late Model main event as he blazed the trail in his O&O Farms/Kartco Racing #5 MasterSbilt entry. The Team S.D.M.F. #88M Warrior of Eugene’s Randy Martin would pass Donahoo on lap three and would set a very rapid pace. Martin looked to have the race won when a couple of late race cautions would occur resulting in the field being bunched up.

But each time Martin would rise to the occasion and continued to stay in the front. Martin would keep back a hard-charging Shaun Mayea, who started dead last, to win his first career Late Model victory.

Shaun Mayea of Bend was second in his Cold Springs Resort/R.G. Remanufacturing/Superior Fuel Cells/Driving Force Graphics #36 Rocket followed by Sweet Home’s Kye Frick in third chauffeuring the No Drought Potable Water/IBEW Local 280/Stetson Racing Engines #08 Swartz. The IBEW Local 280 #8 Swartz of Lynn McDonald, also from Sweet Home, was fourth and Britton Donahoo ended his night in fifth.

In the Northwest Extreme Modifieds Jimmy Owen of Cottage Grove would lead the first few laps in his Eagle Racing Graphics/Dan Martin Excavating/Davis Designs/Steelhouse Metal Roofing Supply #38 machine. Owen would lose the lead on the fourth circuit to Creswell’s Austin McTaggart. McTaggart would dominate the rest of the distance in the West End Performance/Eastside Rollforming Specialties/Bugsy’s Bar & Grill/Dennymite Race Cars #72+ Shaw and would win the race but unfortunately would be disqualified after the post-race inspection. That would give the triumph to Gene Ashley of Jasper to record his third straight feature victory for him and the Furniture Options #85 entry. Jimmy Owen was second followed by the Akin Racing #54 Monster of Scott Akin from Crow in third.

Last but not least the Street Stocks would put on an entertaining race. Matt King of Springfield was quick in the early stages seizing the lead in his Mid-Valley Metal Recycling/King Racing/Warp Graphix #7K Oldsmobile but mechanical problems would force him to retire prematurely. Evan Britton from Cottage Grove would occupy the top spot from there on out as it looked like he was well on his way to winning his sixth race of the season. The Dot’s Trophy Shop/Ollivant Timber Management/Howell Logging/Gilkison & Dad Inc. #85 Nova, of Britton, would lose the lead in the final laps due to a flat right rear tire. Curtis Towns, also of Cottage Grove, was able to pounce on the opportunity to get in front and park the Steve and Russ Blum owned Classic Metal Works/Scarpelli’s Short Stop #6 Nova in victory lane.

Evan Britton managed to finish second followed by the Swan & Sons Woodworking/Smart Solutions/Les Schwab Tires of Bend #17Z Camaro of Bend’s Ethan Landers in third. Eugene's Steve Begley would finish his Crooks Racing #00 Nova in fourth while Daniel Murphy of Roseburg in the Triple D Racing/DCM Motorsport Safety/Rightway Portable Blasting/Puppy Love Treats #75 was credited for fifth.

Congratulations go out to the four champions crowned on Saturday including Colin Baker (Huddle Automotive Repair 360 Sprints), Shaun Mayea (Late Models), Scott Akin (Northwest Extreme Modifieds), and Evan Britton (Street Stocks). The final race on the ¼-mile clay oval will take place on Saturday September 20th at Cottage Grove Speedway. Champions will be crowned in the Northwest Extreme Sprints, IMCA Modifieds, and Hornets while a Demolition Derby will be on the card.

On Saturday Pit Gates will open at 2:00 PM, Front Gates open at 4:00, and racing starts at 6:45. Tickets for this event are Adults $12.00, Seniors/Military/Juniors (13-18) $10.00, Youths (Ages 12-6) $5.00, and Children under the age of 5 are FREE.
