South Central Kentucky Dirt Racing Hall of Fame Builds on Hall of Fame Tradition
SOMERSET, KENTUCKY (December 28, 2023)- A group has been organized to continue a tradition of hall of fame honorees for dirt track racing in the south-central Kentucky area and that group will be known as the South-Central Kentucky Dirt Racing Hall of Fame.
The board that has been compiled to form the group will consist of Chris Tilley (series director of the Valvoline American Late Model Iron-Man Series), Allen Tilley (series director of the KDRA Super Stock Series), Noel Hargis (former racer and retired flagman), Michael Despain (announcer for the Valvoline American Late Model Iron-Man Series), Walt Swafford (long-time racing enthusiast and owner of Swafford Signs), and Mike Sullivan (former writer/contributor for National Dirt Digest and DirtonDirt.com.
The ceremony will take place on Saturday February 10, 2024 at the Center for Rural Development in Somerset, KY at 1:00 pm EST. The Hall of Fame Class of 2024 will include the following drivers: Mark Black, William “Fats” Coffey, Finn Watson, Rod Carter, Jr., Tim Patrick, and Kelly Warren. The Hall of Fame Class of 2024 will include the following contributors: Red and Rose Middleton (former track promoters), Larry Yantz and Family (former track promoters), Joe and Velma Brummett (scorers), and Jack Cornett (Cornett Race Engines). All Hall of Fame Inductees will be invited and given complimentary tickets to see the Country Music duo of The Bellamy Brothers that evening set for 7:00 pm EST. All former inductees are welcomed to attend and will be honored at the awards ceremony.
Previous inductees into the Hall of Fame include (by year): 2020-Greg Hansford, Harold Hardgrove, Royce McGowan, Mike Robinson, Finn Watson (encompassed at another area track), and Johnny Wheeler; 2021-Dale Atwood, Bobby Carrier, Jr., Tom Curtsinger, Keith Decker, Danny McGlothlin, Marshall Delaney, Steve Flynn, Noel Hargis, Billy Todd (Todd Truss), Danny Yanders, and David Marlar; 2022-Goble Bertram, Mike Bradshaw, Joey Daniel, Paul Feistritzer, Jack Girdler, Allen Tilley, Billy and Sherry Todd, Larry Yantz, and Delane Browning; 2023 (encompassed two area tracks)- Tommy Hargis, Carlos Morrow, Doug Smith, Danny Sumpter, Tim Taylor, Chubby Baird, Estill Baker, Jimmy Cundiff, Bobby Carrier, Sr., Eddie Carrier, Sr., Paul Feistritzer, Mike Jewell, C.J. Rayburn, Timmy Yeager, Wayne and Ann Bowen, Archie and Donnie Coffman, and Jeff Gullett.
