Iron-Man Late Model Series
Josh Rice Victorious in Valvoline Iron-Man Late Model Northern Series 20th Annual Iron-Man Classic at Atomic Speedway
WAVERLY, OHIO (September 16, 2023)– The Valvoline Iron-Man Late Model Northern Series would roll into Atomic Speedway in Waverly, OH for the 20th Annual Iron-Man Classic and Josh Rice of Verona, KY would lead all forty laps on the way to his first win in the Iron-Man Classic and the $7,500 payday.
For the 25-year-old Rice, it would be his seventh series win of the season and his thirteenth career Valvoline Iron-Man Late Model Series victory and would come behind the wheel of a Rocket Chassis with a Jay Dickens Race Engine with sponsorship from Sunesis Holdings and Construction, BLOX Spiked Ice, Extreme Sportswear, Map It Right Engineering and Land Surveying, Chain Locker USA, Maxwell Trucking, AirMax Motorsports, Northern Kentucky Equipment, M.C. Tank Transport, and Rice Excavating and Plumbing.
Josh Rice would jump to the lead at the drop of the green flag in the 20th edition of the Iron-Man Classic, followed by Tyler Carpenter, Jesse Wisecarver, Kirk Phillips, and Seth Daniels. The front four would remain the same as Rod Conley would take fifth from Daniels on lap three. Rice would rimride the high side of the racing surface and would set a torrid pace out front and began lapping slower traffic on lap six. Rice would get into heavy lapped traffic on lap nine, allowing Carpenter to close in within three car lengths of Rice, but Rice would clear three cars in one pass in turn one on lap eleven and put some distance back on Carpenter. David Webb would challenge Rod Conley for the fifth spot on lap twelve and take the position and would run down Phillips for fourth, but the first caution of the race would wave on lap sixteen when Camaron Marlar slowed his machine in turn one. The restart would Rice, Carpenter, and Wisecarver maintain the top three spots, with Webb taking fourth, while Phillips would hold fifth. Rice would once again have open track and set a rapid pace and would encounter slower traffic and start the lapping process on lap twenty-two and would work traffic smoothly at this point and maintain a comfortable advantage over Carpenter. The final caution of the event flew on lap thirty when Austin Seelig would spin in turn four. The restart would see the top five remain the same until lap thirty-two when Phillips would retake fourth from Webb and bring R.J. Conley along into fifth. Rice would catch the rear of the field again on lap thirty-seven and would see a two second lead shrink in the closing, but Rice would make a move between two lapped cars in turn three coming to the checkered flag to secure the win. Carpenter would finish second, with Wisecarver finishing third. Phillips and R.J. Conley would complete the top five. The remainder of the top ten finishers would be David Webb, Freddie Carpenter, Jared Hawkins, Seth Daniels, and Rod Conley.
