Sam Seawright Grabs Governor’s Cup Victory with Valvoline Iron-Man Late Model Southern Series at Talladega Short Track

EASTABOGA, ALABAMA (August 12, 2023)– The Valvoline Iron-Man Late Model Southern Series conclude its Alabama weekend at Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, AL on Saturday evening for the 6th Annual Governor’s Cup and Sam Seawright of Fort Payne, AL would lead all fifty laps on the way to his biggest career win with a $10,000 payday.

For the 19-year-old Seawright, it would be his third career Valvoline Iron-Man Late Model Series victory and would come in a Rocket Chassis powered by a Durham Racing Engine and receives sponsorship from Agcor Steel, J&R Lumber Supply, Farm Systems, Inc., J&R Excavating, Team Grown Pediatric Therapy, Coltman Farms, and Kittle Trailer Repair.

With Governor’s Cup Grand Marshall Alabama Senator Lance Bell waving the green flag to start the event, Sam Seawright would take the race lead, with Dillon Tidmore, Trey Mills, Cory Roulette and Austin Horton in pursuit. Joseph Joiner would take fifth place from Horton on lap two and Joiner would continue to move forward as he would take fourth place on lap six from Roulette. With Seawright continuing to show the way out front, Mills would pressure Tidmore for second and take the position on lap twelve, as leader Seawright would start working lapped traffic one circuit later. Seawright would make his way through traffic, while Joiner would work past Tidmore for third on lap sixteen. The front five would remain the same at this point as Seawright continued to work through heavy traffic, with Tyler Millwood taking fifth on lap twenty-four. The first caution of the race waved on lap twenty-six when Millwood would slow on the track. Once action resumed, Seawright maintained the lead, while Joiner would take second from Mills, with Tidmore fourth and Roulette fifth. Tidmore would draw the next caution on lap twenty-eight that would become a red flag when he climbed the wall in turn two and his car would flip back into the track, however, would not be uninjured. Seawright would continue to hold his lead on the restart, followed by Joiner, Mills, while Horton would get fourth from Roulette. With Seawright again opening a comfortable lead, Horton would get around Mills for third on lap forty when Mills got into the outside retaining wall in turn two, with Seawright also catching lapped traffic again at this point. Seawright would keep Joiner at bay the remainder of the way to score the victory, with Joiner coming home second and Horton finishing third, while Mills would take fourth, while Dalton Cook would work past Roulette for fifth on lap forty-nine to complete the top five. Roulette would finish sixth, Parker Martin, Will Roland, Josh Henry, and Christian Hanger completing the top ten finishers.
