Hanson Adds Two More – Runs Streak to Four in a Row

July 5 and 6, 2019, New Richmond, WI
Dating back to the Rene Hughes Memorial at Hibbing Raceway in late June, Harry Hanson has
been untouchable. The long time Late Model pilot has been enjoying his “retirement”, fielding
both a winged and Traditional sprint car with the PIRTEK Upper Midwest Sprintcar Series
(UMSS) the last few summers. After claiming two wins with the UMSS in 2018, to go with a
handful of wins with the Northern Renegades, a sibling series to the UMSS Traditional wingless
class, Hanson has yet to visit Rock Auto victory lane in 2019 sans the wing. But since June 22,
Hanson’s winged program has heated up with the weather.
On Friday night, July 5, the UMSS winged warriors were part of the annual visit by the NOS
Energy Drink World of Outlaws to the famed Cedar Lake Speedway in New Richmond,
Wisconsin. After the heat race wins went to Kevin Lear and Rick Kobs on the opening night of
the two day event, Mother Nature intervened to postpone both the Outlaw and UMSS winged
finales, leaving both programs to run double features the following evening.
Saturday’s program kicked off with the Friday night make-up UMSS feature, with Jack Berger
and Kevin Lear pacing the field to green. The top six starters were all strong early on, with
Hanson, Rick Kobs, Gunner Cummings and Carter Chevalier all applying pressure to the front
row starters. At the end of the 15 lapper it was Hanson claiming his third consecutive feature
win, and second in as many weeks at Cedar Lake. Chasing Hanson to checkers were Cummings,
Kobs, Berger and Chevalier.
In the Saturday portion of the program, Hanson picked up right where he left off, winning the
PIRTEK heat race. Youth was served in the remain two heats, with the Rock Auto qualifier going
to the 16-year old Jack Berger while the Hoosier Tire heat race went to 17-year old Carter
Chevalier.
In the 20-lap nightcap, Chevalier established his #15c at the point early with both Hanson and
Kobs applying pressure. Kobs was the first to sneak by Chevalier and Hanson was close behind.
After a mid-race restart, Hanson managed to get the jump on Kobs and slowly stretched his
lead the rest of the way, collecting his fourth sticker of the season. Kobs settled for second, and
two-time and defending Traditional champion, Cam Schafer ended his 2019 winged debut on
the podium as well. Jack Berger and Denny Stordahl rounded out the top five.
The PIRTEK UMSS is back in action on Friday night, July 19, with both the Winged and
Traditional classes taking to the 1/3 mile Red Cedar Speedway in Menomonie, Wisconsin. More
information about the series is always available at www.umsprints.com as well as the series’
Facebook page.
