Podium finish in Southern Nationals opener at Smoky Mountain

On Friday night Cory Hedgecock was one of 35 Schaeffer’s Southern Nationals series competitors on hand at Smoky Mountain Speedway (Maryville, Tenn.) to kick off the 12-race tour. Following the seventh fastest time in his qualifying group, Hedgecock posted a third place finish in his heat, which positioned him ninth on the starting grid for the opening night feature. With $10,053 on the line, Cory charged through the field six spots to register a third place finish behind Chris Madden and Dale McDowell with Brandon Overton and Ross Bailes rounding out the Top-5. The following night at Wythe Raceway (Rural Retreat, Va.), Cory secured his spot into the $10,053-to-win A-Main with a fifth place finish in his heat. Rolling off ninth, Hedgecock was an early retiree from the 53-lapper on lap 19. He was credited with a 15th place outing.
