Dale McDowell crowned Southern Nationals champ
Shane McDowell Racing pilot Dale McDowell lifted the lid on his Memorial Day weekend on Saturday afternoon at Dixie Speedway (Woodstock, Ga.) for the Schaeffer’s Spring Nationals opener. Locked into the eighth-starting position for the opening night feature via his qualifying effort, Dale gained four spots in the 40-lapper to register a fourth-place finish. The following night at Rome Speedway (Rome, Ga.), McDowell topped the charts in his group in time trials, which positioned him on the pole for the $4,053-to-win A-Main. After setting the pace for the first 10 circuits, Dale suffered a flat right-rear tire that sent him to the infield. Charging from the tail of the field to finish fifth, McDowell trailed Tyler Millwood, Donald McIntosh, Jason Croft, and Randy Weaver to the checkers.
To wrap up the Schaeffer’s Spring Nationals slate on Monday, Dale stopped at 411 Motor Speedway (Seymour, Tenn.) for the ninth annual Scott Sexton Memorial. With preliminary results lining him up fourth on the starting grid for the $10,052-to-win finale, McDowell held his spot in the 52-lapper to finish fourth.
His trio of Top-5 finishes over the weekend secured McDowell his second straight Schaeffer’s Spring Nationals points title. He earned $10,053.
