GREAT RACING ACTION AT THE 20th ANNUAL DON GARST MEMORIAL - See more at: http://modfury.com/2014/06/03/great-racing-action-at-the-20th-annual-don-gars

(By Bill Grit) 5-31-14 MAYETTA, KS – The Don Garst Memorial Race is Thunder Hill’s longest running special event held in memory of the tracks first-ever flagman. Ninety-five competitors raced to win a share of the additional prize monies provided by the Garst family and sponsors. Tyler Garst would jump into the flagstand and flag the IMCA Modifieds in honor of his Grandfather. Special thanks go out to the Garst family and all the sponsors that helped make the event a success.

The Belleville Motor Sports IMCA Northern SportMods would also have additional prizes and money up for grabs. Smith Brothers Transmission provided four hundred dollars in lap money, Belleville Motor Sports donated a Hoosier tire to the winner and the Garst family put additional pay in the top four finishers. This class would have the first of two B features of the evening, where Troy Baumgartner would pick up the win, with six other contenders transferring into the A feature event. Baumgartner went on to finish the main event with a solid sixth place finish. The twenty four car main event would find Austin Carter in the lead prior to the halfway mark fighting off a hard charging Dusty Leonard. Several late race cautions would keep the field held tightly together as Leonard tried everything he could to get the lead. It was an extremely hard fought battle, but at the checkered flag it was Carter in the Pit Pass Liquor Victory Lane. Carter failed post-race inspection, giving the victory to Dusty Leonard followed by Jeremy Pittsenbarger, Dustin Crist, Aaron Hilderman and Luke Stallbaumer.

The BSB Manufacturing IMCA Modifieds, the final feature of the evening, would go twenty laps, caution free. There would be one thousand and twenty dollars going to the winner of this event, with the twenty dollars signifying the Twentieth Annual Don Garst Memorial Race. This race would be a Fast Shafts Ballot Qualifier for the IMCA Super Nationals in Boone, Iowa later in the year. Tyler Garst would take to the flagstand with his Grandpa’s flags that had been in storage since his death. The racing surface was smooth from top to bottom, allowing the competitors multiple grooves as they raced to the checkered flag. Justin Becker set the pace, but it didn’t take Jordan Grabouski long to make his presence known at the front of the field. Clay Hale posed a threat to Grabouski, trying on more than one occasion to take the lead before lap traffic would pose a problem. As they raced off of turn four for the final time, it was Jordan Grabouski who would take the prize money and become the Fast Shaft Ballot Qualifier in the Pit Pass Liquor Victory Lane. Clay Hale would take second place, with extra pay from the Garst family and a new Hoosier tire from Hoosier Tire Great Plains/Precise Racing. Matt Stallbaumer, Cory Wray and Danny Holt rounded out the top five as the top four praised Thunder Hill for its extremely smooth and fast racing surface. The B Feature winner earlier in this division would be credited to Kyle Stallbaumer, who made his first appearance of the year at Thunder Hill Speedway.

Gift certificates for discounts on shock packages and stickers from BSB Manufacturing were given to all racers in the Modifieds, Stock Cars and Northern SportMod divisions. Fast Shaft by Axle Exchange also provided stickers to all racers, as well as Fast Shaft t-shirts that went to the non-qualifiers and the winner of the Modified main event. Great Plains Hoosier Tire/Precise Racing donated additional gift cards that were also distributed to the non-qualifiers.

Racing resumes Saturday night, June 7th at Thunder Speedway for Heinen Repair Service Night at the Races. Come out and show your support to our Stock Car Division Sponsor and to enjoy some edge of your seat racing action. Bring a friend!!! Driver’s meeting is at 6:30 with racing to follow.
