Mayetta, KS – Thunder Hill Speedway hosted great racing on Saturday night once again for the 2014 season. It was tough to do considering the triple digit temperatures that faced everyone in attendance, but the fine folks at Thunder Hill put on a great show and raised some money for a good cause!
The big event of the night was the BSB Manufacturing IMCA Modified Feature. A field of 25 cars checked in to battle it out on Saturday night and within that field there 2 former IMCA Modified National Champions in the mix, Jordan Grabouski and David Murray. When you add them in with the regular field at Thunder Hill it meant that the fans were going to see one heck of a feature.
At the drop of the green flag it was the pole setter, Kyle Olberding, getting the quick drop on the field and taking the top spot.
Last week’s winner, Justin Becker, also flirted with the top spot in the early going, but it was Grabouski that was making up some ground quickly.
From his 5th row outside starting spot, Grabouski, a 4 time winner at Thunder Hill on the season, jumped to the front to battle with the leaders Olberding, Becker and Danny Holt.
Coming out of turn 4 Grabouski made the power move on the outside and went around Olberding on the high side to take the top spot. After that it was all Grabouski at the front of the field he would navigate the traffic and hold on to the finish for win #5 on the season.
Holt ran a strong race and would finish 2nd, Hunter Marriott started 12th and finished 3rd, 4th went to David Murray after starting 11th and rounding out the top 5 was Jeff Jones.
Billy Carreno and Bryan Rigsby would pace the field to the green flag in the Belleville Motor Sports IMCA Northern Sport Mod main event.
As the green flag went skyward, Luke Stallbaumer rose to the occassion.
Several yellow flags would hold up this feature from getting underway, but once it did get underway it became a good 3 way battle at the front between Stallbaumer, Tyler Frye and the points leader, Jeremy Pittsenbarger.
Stallbaumer, a former feature winner in 2014, took to the point position early in the race and would have to fend off challenges from both Frye and Pittsenbarger. The talent level amongst the 3 drivers was evident as well their respectful driving styles. Each of the 3 drivers never leaned on each other as they battled it out in tight quarters all feature long.
In the end Stallbaumer would prove to be too strong on the night. He would thwart all the advances and log win #2 on the season.
Frye would win the battle for 2nd, Pittsenbarger would settle for 3rd, 4th went to last week’s winner, Austin Charles, who started 13th and Troy Baumgartner finished 5th after starting 14th on the grid.
Racing action continues next week at Thunder Hill Speedway on Saturday, Aug. 30th. All 5 IMCA classes will be in competition. Make sure you plan to attend today and as always; BRING A FRIEND!
