Sanders clinches fourth USMTS title at RPM Speedway
Rodney Sanders wrapped up the United States Modified Touring Series campaign over the weekend at RPM Speedway. The driver of the Wichita Tank Racing No. 20 Kenny’s Tile/ ARMI Contractors/ MB Customs/ Hatfield Racing Engine Modified clinched his second-straight National Championship and fourth of his career.
“It certainly wasn’t the end to the season we’d hoped for, but we were able to clinch the championship. It was a fun year battling with Dereck [Ramirez] for the championship, it came down to the wire. It’s still surreal to think that we’ve now won four USMTS championships. It’s a great accomplishment and I couldn’t be prouder of my team. Thank you to everyone who helped make this great year and championship possible.
Rodney Sanders was one of 45 United States Modified Touring Series entries registered at RPM Speedway in Crandall, Texas on Thursday to wrap up the season with the 3rd Annual Summit Southern Nationals.
Scoring a second-place finish in his heat behind Jack Sartain, Sanders locked into the 10th-starting position for the opening night feature. With $2,000 on the line, Rodney was an early retiree from the 35-lapper on lap 21.
In a $3,000-to-win program on Friday night, Rodney recorded a fourth-place finish in his heat race, transferring him into the B-Main. Jumping up one spot to place fifth, Sanders locked into the 21st-starting position for the main event. Running into more trouble in the 40-lap affair, Rodney was sidelined on lap 27 for the remainder of the feature.
On Saturday afternoon, Sanders came in sixth in his heat before scratching from his B-Main. Relying on a provisional to start the $5,100-to-win finale, Rodney marched forward 12 spots in the 50-lapper to register a 13th place outing.
