Inside Line Promotions – COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. (Aug. 9, 2016) – Patrick Dills is closing in on his second straight Extreme Sprints championship at Cottage Grove Speedway.
Dills scored his 11th top 10 of the season last Saturday to give himself a 19-point lead in the championship standings with only one race in the class remaining.
The night began with Dills qualifying second quickest around the quarter-mile oval. He then finished where he started – third – in a heat race to lock into the feature inversion.
“We always are really strong at the beginning of the night and then we stay consistent through the rest of the night,” he said.
Unfortunately, the No. 10 was drawn for the feature inversion so Dills lined up on the outside of the fourth row for the main event.
“We fell back to ninth on the start,” he said. “The race went green to checkered. We could have used a yellow. We were really strong. I was running the top pretty hard all the way around. Other cars were trying to run the middle and the bottom. I was up to fifth and I blew the cushion in turns one and two and dropped back a spot. The car was really good. I just made an error toward the end and tried to enter the corner different.”
Dills settled for a sixth-place finish.
He will return to Cottage Grove Speedway this Saturday in the 360ci division. Dills enters this weekend ranked sixth in the standings – only seven points out of fourth place and 25 points behind third.
“We’re excited to get back to 360s,” he said. “We’re going to try to stay consistent all night and move up the points ladder. I need to qualify good and make sure I’m consistent. I’ve got to hit the track running, stay focused and have the confidence that I’m capable of winning.”
