PUTNAMVILLE, Ind. -- Sprint car rookie William Marvel Jr. flipped his car during a practice lap at the Lincoln Park Speedway and was killed, track officials said.
Marvel, 32, of Indianapolis, was running practice laps on the track Saturday when the car flipped in the third turn. Marvel was pinned in the car for a short time.
A Putnam County Hospital emergency team could not revive Marvel, and he was pronounced dead at the scene, of cardiac arrest.
Before joining the sprint car circuit this year, Marvel had driven stock cars professionally. Marvel's father William Sr. is an official with the U.S. Auto Club.
