Hodges Motorsports Update - USA Raceway

The night is all wrapped up here at the thunderin' 3/8 mile that is USA Raceway. It was the third night of the year for the ASCS Southwest sprints, after a pair of ASCS National dates at the Copper on Dirt in February. I started off the night pulling the 69 pill, placing me in the 6th starting spot for the second heat race. The track was tacky with a small black streak through the middle, and after moving the 4th starting position with a car dropping out, I was able to work myself to 2nd which set us up in the top 8 redraw. We pulled number one to start on the pole for the main event, on a track that was widening out. I got out to the early lead, and caught some lap traffic fairly early. I kept getting tighter and tighter on the right rear as I had to slow the car down, and in traffic I slipped back to third. I was able to regroup a little and make my way to the bumper of 2nd place when a yellow came out at about lap 12. On the restart, us front three got a little strung out until things got dicey when lap traffic came once again. With the car getting tighter and tighter, I kept trying to hold on and got next to second a couple times, including a run cutting off the cushion to the bottom coming to the line for the checkers, but was unable to get by, and finished 3rd behind the winner Calvin Landis, and second place Rick Ziehl. All in all it wasn't a bad night, but we certainly thought there is room to gain in the main event, so we look forward to next time. Our plans for next week and beyond are unclear now, but we will update the schedule page when we have made a decision.
