Inside Line Promotions – LONGDALE, Okla. (Aug. 29, 2017) – Zach Blurton recorded another runner-up result last Saturday at Longdale Speedway to increase his lead in the United Rebel Sprint Series championship standings and keep his chances alive for an International Motor Contest Association national title.
Blurton opened the event by advancing from fifth to third place in a heat race. He drew the No. 2 starting position for the main event and led a majority of the race before a late-race caution cost him a chance at his fourth feature win of 2017.
“I led over half the race,” he said. “With about seven laps to go I had a straightaway lead and had two lapped cars between me and second place. A car spun and on the restart I really didn’t know where to run. I was the only one running the top in turns one and two and I could see the bottom of turns three and four was getting black. I just kept searching around for the rubber and got passed by Andy Shouse. I’ve finished second to him like four times this year and he’s the defending IMCA champion.”
Blurton went into Saturday’s race ranked ninth in IMCA national points and he feels with a little luck he’s got a shot at the championship.
“After Saturday we should have moved up to sixth or seventh in points,” he said. “If we keep rolling like we have and get in the top three the last six point races and get the bonus points we have a shot. We need some luck and no rainouts.”
Blurton carries a ton of momentum and confidence into the RaceSaver IMCA Sprint Nationals this Friday through Sunday at Eagle Raceway in Eagle, Neb. There are already nearly 140 teams entered for the event.
“Last year we had horrible pill draws and that put us behind all weekend,” he said. “They have changed the format up a little and if you get a bad pill draw you still have a shot to advance your starting spot in the mains. There are passing points involved.”
Blurton explained the top-nine finishers in Friday’s feature are locked into Sunday’s championship race. There is also a Race of Champions event on Saturday that he will compete in.
“I’ll get to race every night,” he said. “Of course the first goal is to finish in the top nine on Friday. With the new format if we don’t we have another shot Saturday every car we pass puts us higher in the alphabet of features. Last year I raced my way into the C Main both nights and missed the B Main by one car. Two years ago I nearly won the feature on the second night. The good news is this is the most confidence I’ve had going into the Nationals.”
