Blurton Captures Third Win of the Season and Increases URSS Points Lead

Inside Line Promotions – OBERLIN, Kan. (Aug. 22, 2017) – Zach Blurton scored his third win of the season last Friday when he claimed the checkered flag at Rooks County Fairgrounds to open a successful weekend that padded his points lead in the United Rebel Sprint Series championship standings.

“It was a fantastic weekend,” he said. “Driver error probably cost us $3,000 though. I slipped off the track Sunday at Oberlin running third and probably could have won. That would have gotten us the two-day bonus along with a bonus for passing the most cars over the weekend. The good news is we had the car to beat all weekend. We could have won all three nights.”

The competition began on Friday at Rooks County Fairgrounds in Stockton, Kan., where a great pill draw put Blurton to the outside front row of his heat race, which he promptly won. He then started sixth in the feature event.

“I got up to second on the first lap, but struggled a little when we got into lapped traffic,” he said. “A lapped car spun in turn four and kept going. Someone came on the radio and said yellow, but I knew it wasn’t the race series director’s voice so I kept going while everyone else slowed. I was all over the track trying to avoid them. They never threw the yellow. Turn one started to rubber up and we split a lapped car and were side by side down the backstretch. I knew you had to be on the bottom of turn three and he went in too hard and I got around him. The last three laps I pulled away.”

The team ventured to Oberlin Speedway for a doubleheader that began on Saturday for the Bob Salem Memorial.

“It’s run in honor of our series promoter’s dad,” Blurton said. “It’s pretty cool.”

A high pill draw put Blurton toward the tail of his heat race.

“Everyone was all over the place in the heat and I couldn’t pass,” he said. “A guy spun right in front of me and I had to get on the brakes and that put me way behind. In the B Main I started eighth and won it. That gave me a ton of confidence. The car was really good.”

Blurton rolled off 13th in the A Main and quickly jumped to seventh in the opening laps.

“I got to sixth and we had an open red and made some little changes,” he said. “I was on the bottom and everyone else was running the top so I went up and started to slide some people and got to third, but the yellow came out putting me back to fourth. On the restart I got back to third and the top two guys were racing each other hard. I was waiting for them to crash or make a mistake, but they didn’t.”

Blurton finished third to continue his momentum into Sunday’s $1,000-to-win event at Oberlin Speedway. Blurton dominated his heat race from the pole position. He started fifth in the feature and quickly moved into the runner-up spot.

“I took the lead at one point, but we had a caution so I went back a spot,” he said. “Oberlin is a high-banked, 3/8-mile track and I was running the top. I got too close to the leader and it took the air off my wing and I just got too aggressive and slid off the track in turns three and four and finished sixth. That one little mess-up cost us big time.”

Blurton’s sixth-place result was his 23rd top 10 this season.

He plans to head to Longdale Speedway in Longdale, Okla., this Saturday as part of the URSS versus the Sprint Series of Oklahoma event. Blurton will then turn his attention to the RaceSaver IMCA Sprint Nationals at Eagle Raceway in Eagle, Neb., Sept. 1-3.
