Wednesdays with Wayne – Strong I-80 Run Sets Up Hockett/McMillin Memorial!

(Bill W) September 23, 2015 – A second place run in the Fall Brawl at I-80 Speedway near Greenwood, Nebraska has the Wayne Johnson Racing #77x team ready for this weekend’s Jesse Hockett/Daniel McMillin Memorial at the Lucas Oil Speedway near Wheatland, Missouri. Wayne’s runs last weekend (his other was an eighth place finish) have him in striking distance of Lucas Oil ASCS National Series point leaders, Aaron Reutzel and Johnny Herrera.
With last Friday’s events washed away at I-80, it meant double features for Saturday. Wayne raced from sixth to third in his heat. “We kind of got a tough start,” he says. “Then we got to racing with (Dusty) Zomer there. By the time we got by him, we ran (second place Justin) Henderson down in a lap. Either way, we got in the redraw. The car was really good in the heat.”
After drawing the seven, he would charge forward. “We got going decent,” says Wayne, who swept the Fall Brawl in 2014. “We were finally able to get by (Matt) Covington for third. I never dreamt the track was going to take rubber. It was dragging the left rear pretty hard through it. I had a RD-12 on and it was starting to give up really badly. I was trying to baby it and take care of it. Covington and someone else blew one out. I knew we were in trouble.”
With two laps to go, Wayne would coast to second. “They had a caution for Reutzel,” he says. “He had his tire go down. Henderson was leading then, and I was second. I knew I had a soft left rear tire and I looked at it. The end was really chewed off. We had a green, white, checker finish. I tried (Henderson) on the restart around the bottom. After I didn’t get him, I fell in line so we would finish. It was a decent finish.”
The second feature had an invert of twelve. Competitors knew it would be tough to pass with the rubber down conditions. “The Late Models actually knocked a bit of the rubber off,” says Wayne. “But it only took two or three laps to lay it back down in that second feature. What you got on the start is what you were going to get. I was on the inside, and I felt I needed to be on the outside. We were able to get to tenth and then got two cars in the rubber.”
The eighth place finish has Wayne 33 points behind Johnny Herrera for second, and 99 behind Reutzel, who leads the series. Winning this weekend would be special for Wayne. “We’ve never been able to win the Hockett,” he says. “I’d like to win that race bad. Jesse and I were buddies, so it would be great to get in the resume. That place has never been that kind to me. We were pretty decent last year there, and we’re going back with the same car.”
