Wednesdays with Wayne – Strong Weekend at Grays Harbor!
(Bill W) July 8, 2015 – It was a good weekend, save the draw, for Wayne Johnson and the #77x team at Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma, Washington. He came home with fourth and second place finishes despite drawing the seven pill both nights. The team and the Lucas Oil ASCS National Series take this weekend off before moving on to Montana and the Electric City Speedway in Great Falls as well as Billings Motorsports Park.
Grays Harbor is a track Wayne has won at before and he started Friday’s preliminary off well. “I like Grays Harbor,” he says. “They do an awesome job preparing the track, and I love going there. It’s just a good racy racetrack. We started on the pole and won the heat. That put us in the redraw and we started seventh in the feature.”
Things got off to a slow start. “We fell back to tenth or twelfth on the start,” says Wayne. “We were horrible. We were way too tight on Friday night. We just rallied at the end and got rolling. We were pretty good there at the end of the race.”
He would surge to a fourth place finish, locking him into Saturday’s finale. “We almost got (Aaron) Reutzel there at the end for third,” says Wayne. “Getting fourth was what we needed to do to get locked in, so that was a good thing.”
Wayne’s luck of the draw didn’t improve Saturday. “We got the old seven again,” he says. “I can’t draw for (anything). Saturday night, we were too loose. I was rolling around there pretty decent. We were just riding there in fifth for a while. We were just kind of riding there.”
A late caution made him sit up in the seat a little and make an adjustment. “We probably were going to finish fifth, but the caution came out with six to go,” says Wayne. “I put the wing back under the caution. I was pissed off too, because a couple guys roughed me up a little bit on the track when they didn’t have to. I drove in there like it didn’t make any difference. I ran them up the hill a little bit like they did me, and we ended up getting up to second.”
The car was at its fastest at the end of the feature. “We were rolling,” says Wayne. “My quickest lap was the 30th lap of the race. It was the second quickest lap of the race. Johnny (Herrera) got a good lead and was out there. He got away from me, but I was catching him by the end.”
