Wednesdays with Wayne – Looking for Third Ronald Laney Memorial!
The Wayne Johnson Racing #77x team is looking for their third Ronald Laney Memorial win this weekend at East Bay Raceway Park near Tampa, Florida. The ASCS National event will commence with practice tonight, followed by racing on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
East Bay Raceway Park has always been good to the veteran Oklahoman now living in Knoxville, Iowa. “This track has always been good to me,” says Wayne. “I don’t know why…it just fits my style. It’s been good to me, and fits what I do, I guess.”
Wayne is looking for a record third win in the prestigious event. “We were able to win it in 2010 (driving for Glenn Styres) and last year,” he says. “I think we’re the only two-time winner, along with Gary Wright. I think Gary’s first win came before it was dedicated to Ronald though.”
Ronald Laney was from Humble, Texas, and Wayne has fond memories of racing with Ronald with both ASCS and the NCRA series. “I grew up racing with Ronald, so this is always a big deal for us,” he says. “I’d love to win it again. We had a lot of good times, and he comes from a great family too.”
Last week at Volusia went downhill after practice. The rest of the week saw the team chasing a mechanical issue. “We blew the rear-end up early in the week,” says Wayne. “Then we thought the water pump was the issue. We didn’t know the motor was hurt. We fixed the water pump the next night, and the motor started locking up. We leaked it down and it was ok, but we must have knocked something out of it.”
The team has replaced the 410 with a 360 and they’re ready to get some laps in tonight. “We’re ready for practice tonight,” says Wayne while shoveling some mud out of his pit spot. “It’s been a little rainy and a little cold for down here. It beats being in Iowa right now though, I can tell you that!”
