Inside Line Promotions – MANSFIELD, Ohio (May 2, 2018) – A cut tire brought a disappointing end to what appeared to be a run that would lock Rob Chaney and CH Motorsports into one of the top eight starting spots for the $100,000-to-win feature last weekend during the Sprint Car World Championship at Mansfield Motor Speedway.

Chaney led the first 20 laps of one of the two 30-lap qualifying features on Friday night that guaranteed the top four finishers a starting spot in the first four rows of Saturday’s 50-lap main event.

“I was able to get the lead at the start,” said Chaney, who qualified 20th quickest out of more than 70 drivers before winning a heat race to garner the pole position for the A Main. “I had a really good car. I felt like I could run anywhere I wanted to.”

Although Chaney continued to lead through a couple of restarts, he noticed that something was amiss with his machine.

“I could tell something was going on,” he said. “It had changed and I really couldn’t run the way I wanted to run. I wasn’t sure if it was a suspension thing or a tire. Then right at 10 laps to go we blew a right rear. It must’ve gotten a hole in it and was leaking out a little bit before finally letting go.”

Chaney, who was credited with a 16th-place result, took the frustrating moment in stride as much as possible.

“On the one hand, we’d run one race this year and 15 last year, so to show up there and be that competitive with that strong of a group of guys was a pretty good accomplishment,” he said. “But you never want to give up chances to win races, no matter what they pay or what the situation is. And when you add on that it locks you into a $100,000 race with a starting spot in the top eight (it’s frustrating). But it is what it is. Complaining about it isn’t going to change it. We do what we do and move on.”

The event wrapped up on Saturday. Chaney finished second in his heat race, placing him on the outside of the front row for one of the B Mains. A second-place finish in that race qualified him for the main event, in which he started 21st.

“We just didn’t get going very well and there was a lot of traffic back there,” he said. “We got lapped early and kind of struggled. When we had the fuel stop we noticed that there was some damage on the front end and steering. Given the situation, we decided to pull in.”

Chaney, who finished 22nd, enjoyed the event and hopes that the promoter is able to continue with it.

“I wish for Cody Sommer that the weather would have been better,” he said. “But it still looked like a lot of people supported it. The car count was great as was the quality of the cars. It was nice to see the Pennsylvania guys there and the Knoxville guys. I thought they did a great job with the circumstances they had with the weather. I hope he’s able to keep building on it.”
