Tuesdays with TMAC – A Pair of Podiums with the IRA!
Des Moines, IA (September 18, 2018) – While “Tuesdays with TMAC” has been on a brief hiatus, Terry McCarl has not! The veteran driver from Altoona, Iowa is coming off a streak that saw him score five podiums and two 4th-place finishes in his last seven races, including a 3rd and 2nd last weekend with the IRA Sprints. Next on the schedule is the $6,000 to win “Bill Waite Jr. Memorial” at LaSalle Speedway this Sunday night!
Friday night’s festivities at the Clay County Fairgrounds in Spencer, Iowa got off to an early start for Terry and Austin McCarl, as they had their cars setup at the Justice Brothers/Gillund Enterprises booth before the races got underway. “Justice Brothers/Gillund Enterprises sponsor both myself and Austin, so it was great to be represented at their booth on Friday,” said TMAC. “It was a great opportunity to talk with people that were at the fair and hopefully it led to some extra people in the stands and new fans of the sport.”
The great atmosphere and crowd of the Clay County Fair was treated to a well-prepared racetrack that saw McCarl qualify 4th and finish 4th in his heat, before drawing, you guessed it, the number four pill to set the A-main lineup. “SLS Promotions did an outstanding job preparing the track on Friday night,” said Terry. “The track in the feature had moisture right around the bottom and up on top, but was slick in the middle, which led to great racing.”
From the outside of the second row, TMAC would waste no time getting to the point, going on to lead lap one. “Kerry [Madsen] drew the pole, but we were able to drive past everyone from 4th on the first lap,” said McCarl. “I settled in running the bottom and the car was working really well. The bottom was pretty tricky and you really had to hit your marks, but we stretched it out to about a straightaway lead before the caution flew.”
With the caution bunching the field back up, Madsen restarted right on TMAC’s tail tank and had a bit of an advantage due to their preferred lines. “The yellow coming out let our tires cool down and on the restart Kerry was able to get heat built up quicker running the top,” said Terry. “He got around us right after the restart, but I was able to run him back down and get around him on the bottom, but then we had another caution!”
After the same scenario played out again after the second caution, Terry moved the TMAC Motorsports #24 to the top and ended the 25-lap feature in 3rd. “After Kerry got around me the second time I started running the top,” said TMAC. “In hindsight, I should have stayed on the bottom, because Justin [Henderson] ended up getting by for second.”
“All together, it was a great night getting to race in front of Paul Gillund and his team, as well as a lot of our other sponsors like Simplot Grower Solutions Rens Trucking. While the driver part of me was upset that we weren’t able to grab the win, the promoter side of my brain was happy that we were able to put on a great show for everyone on a great track!”
Terry and the TMAC Motorsports team then followed the IRA Sprints to Deer Creek Speedway for a Saturday night show that culminated in another podium for the #24 flying the Mastell Brothers colors. “It was great having Mastell Brothers on both my car and Carson’s, who brought the #97 out for the first time this year,” said Terry.
The night got off to a great start with Terry timing in second quick and scoring another runner-up finish in his heat. “That was the best I’ve ever felt at Deer Creek,” said McCarl. “We were fast all night long; in qualifying, we were fast time nearly to the end with Kerry just getting us and we had a strong run in our heat.”
For the second night in a row, TMAC drew the number four pill for the A-main lineup. “We drew the outside of the second row again and, through the early stages of the race, I was just searching around trying to find where the car was fast,” said Terry. “Deer Creek is high-banked and fast, but also a pretty tricky racetrack.”
The night would end with yet another runner-up finish, making it the third of the night, though Terry and the team walked away feeling good about the weekend. “Our setups were off just a bit to beat Kerry this weekend, but he is “Outlaw” fast right now,” said TMAC. “Ending the weekend with two podiums is solid, and I think had Madsen not been there, we would have won each night.”
TMAC will be back in action this Sunday night at LaSalle Speedway in Illinois for the “Bill Waite Jr. Memorial,” shooting for the $6,000 winner’s check!
