Potrzebowski, Comes to WCIS for Practice, but Leaves A Winner

PERRY, NY-- TJ Potrzebowski showed up to the "Blacktop BullRing" to get some practice for the upcoming Labor Day weekend race, as well as the $10,000 to win American 100 October 8th and 9th. As the racing season winds down a few invaders show up to get their base line on a set up for the tricky 1/3rd mile speedway; this was Potrzebowski’s team's plan. But, as the night wore on it was looking like they had a car capable of winning the main event after a solid second place finish in his heat to winner Wayne Baker. The McGuire Motorsports #72 team made some adjustments to get the car ready for the 30 lap feature, which he would start back in the 12th starting position. Early on, TJ found that the low groove was not as fast as the second and third groove.  With this realization, the veteran Potrzebowski adjusted accordingly and pointed his #72 to the front. Using both the inside and outside lane effectively, and managing the cautions, the #72 was out front by lap 22.  A few late restarts, and a few challenges from Wayne Baker, gave Potrzebowski some trouble, but he was not to be denied. After the race, Potrzebowski was quoted saying “It’s been a few years since we won a race here, and this track seemed easier to win at 10 or 15 years ago, but then again I’m getting older and competition has definitely stepped up." The heat races were won by Todd Lorenzo, Cam Ayres, and Wayne Baker.
In the largest field so far in 2016, nine super stocks made the call and they put on quite a show. It may sound strange, but in this class about half or more are battling for the win each and every week. Last night the entire field of Super Stocks saw red. No, not mad or angry, but the color of the trunk lid on the MMSportsPhotos, TW Motorsports #4 of Joe Horvatits. On a usual night we would watch the #11k of Dave Krawzcyk march to the front, and like many times, collect a win. But, that was not the case on this night as it was Joe Horvatits' night. After the race, an ecstatic Horvatits said, “The car was on a rail, thanks to the crew that finally got the chassis dialed in. Horvatits also won the heat race.
The 4 cylinder class was like the other classes with its surprise winner. Picking up his first ever feature win was Jason Pierce, sporting his #5 black and yellow Saturn. With the track handicapping the line-ups as part of the weekly procedure, this put Pierce on the front row for the start of the feature event. The green flag dropped and Pierce wasted no time putting distance on the rest of the field. The 2016 power house cars of Maddy Virts and Jimmie Pierce, Jr. started 7th and 8th. A few cautions later, and some mighty stiff competition in the form of Carrie Bolton, Virts, and Jacob Gustafson, the Parthemer race team #5 stayed smooth in the closing laps to collect his first feature win of his career. He also won his heat race, along with Jacob Gustafson.
Racing action returns to the BullRing next weekend in the first of our two-day shows. The SST Modifieds and 4 Cylinders will be joined by the Vintage Late Models on Saturday, September 3rd's race card, while the mighty modifieds make their return in the first of two big money shows and will run 75 laps for $5,000 to win. The Super Stocks and the WCIS debut of the Classic American Modified Series (CAMS) will also fill the Sunday portion of the weekend's events. Gates open at 10:00 am and racing will begin at 3:00 pm both Saturday and Sunday.
