Tulsa win gets Hansen off to a strong 2023 Sooner Late Model start

(Danny Clum Photo) John Rittenoure - TULSA, Okla. (April 15, 2023) - Friday night Brett Hansen had to settle for second best in the Complete Well Testing Sooner Late Model Series presented by Hayden Ross Motorsports Foundation season opener at Thunderbird Speedway. That was not the case Saturday.

Hansen started on the pole by virtue of a redraw in the feature and set a strong pace on the way to victory at Tulsa Speedway.

“Tulsa has been good to me so far with two wins,” said Hansen who won at Tulsa last season. “It is fun track. It has got some character. It got a little rough in (turns) 3 and 4 tonight, but it was much better as far as the smoothness over last year.”

After chasing Kip Hughes to finish second on Friday Hansen made some adjustments to his late model before towing to Tulsa.

“I lacked a little bit last night and made some changes today and it was better,” Hansen said. “We just changed some bar angles and gearing. I got is back to where we were last year.”

Eric Brill gave chase in the first five laps before giving way to Richard Shepler. Rookie Eli Ross, who started 7th, worked his way into third on lap six and closed on Shepler. Coming off the final turn Ross drove inside of Shepler and nipped him at the finish line for second. Kearney Weaver finished fourth behind Shepler and Gary Lowe picked up fifth.

Sooner Late Model Series
The Sooner Late Model Series was formed in 2016 by Enid Speedway co-promoter Mark Brill. Brill felt there was not many opportunities for late model competitors to race in Oklahoma and the Sooner Late Model Series was formed. Now the series has grown beyond the borders of Oklahoma with events held in the neighboring states of Kansas, Texas and Arkansas as well.
