Minnesota Missile Monday: Season Championship Night at Plessis
Hartley, Iowa
August 31, 2020
A beautiful evening welcomed racers to a little bullring out in the country just north of Hwy. 18 near Hartley, Iowa. Plessis Motor Speedway hosted their final points night and crowned point champions for the 2020 season. 1KC Motorsports made their third trip of the season to the track to prepare for the upcoming Bullring Nationals scheduled for September 5th over Labor Day weekend.
Only four drivers signed in to compete in the BP class but they were all evenly competitive, making for some exciting racing action.
The feature had Willy Kirk and Karter Heiskell pacing the field on the front row with KC Sparks and Hunter Hanson in row two. When the green dropped, Kirk jumped to the lead going into turn one while Sparks pulled to the inside of Heiskell, taking the runner up position down the backstretch. Heiskell had his hands full as he built up his momentum heading into turn three with Hanson making a charge to his inside. Hanson had the preferred line out of turn four.
Kirk quickly built up a lead over the field. On the third circuit, the infield disc at the apex of the three and four turns was out of place and Kirk caught it sending his kart into a cone and back out on the track at a bad angle causing his kart to flip. Kirk was okay and minimal damage to his kart allowed him to restart at the tail of the field.
Sparks led Hanson on the restart. The four pack of drivers remained nose to tail for the next few laps until Heiskell started making a challenge for second, allowing Sparks to open up a comfortable lead. Heiskell made several challenges to Hanson’s inside but the momentum kept Heiskell behind.
Finally, Heiskell got a strong drive out of four and pulled alongside Hanson down the frontstretch. As they maneuvered through the corner, Hanson got hung outside and Kirk followed Heiskell past Hanson. There were not enough laps remaining for Heiskell or Kirk to close in and challenge Sparks for the lead and Sparks raced to his second win of the season at Plessis Motor Speedway. Heiskell held Kirk off with Hanson finishing fourth.
Kirk won both heat races and locked up the point championship before taking the green in the feature event. Hanson claimed second place in the season point title.
