JORGENSON PUTS IN AN IMPRESSIVE DRIVE TO CAPTURE HOBBYFEST VI AT TOMAH SPARTA SPEEDWAY

We hold some very big marquee racing events throughout the season here at Tomah Sparta Speedway. The Sportsmen division’s night to shine comes during the Tim Myer Memorial, while the Hornet and Sixer divisions get the spotlight all to themselves during the Hornet Hustle and Sixer Mania events. The Legends and Bandoleros debuted their SpeedFest event last season, and it will be an even bigger show in less than a month. The modifieds returned this year for the three-race Modified Mayhem Showdown, which will crown their champion this coming Friday night. Since 2020 the Hobby Stocks showcase their best racers from across the Midwest at their annual HobbyFest event. This year’s sixth running featured a new star rising to the top of the Hobby Stock ranks as Jimmie Jorgenson drove around Kaley Hardy on lap 12 and even pulled away from veteran Hobby Stock campaigner Andy Moore to score the biggest race win of his career. With Jorgenson’s impressive drive in the 35 lap feature, that now makes it six different winners in the six runnings of HobbyFest.

This year’s HobbyFest feature would be an even greater challenge for the competitors as they would race for 35 laps. Kaleb Hardy powered around Andy Raley for the lead at the start of the race, but Raley would rally back around Hardy to take the lead position on lap two. As Raley began to open a small lead on Hardy, Richard Itzen spun in turn two to bring out an early yellow on lap five. Hardy again made the outside work on the restart as he surged ahead at the end of lap five. Things would be different after Hardy and Raley made contact in turn two and that allowed Hardy to take firm control of the race. Hardy tried to pull away from the field, but Jimmie Jorgenson took over second on lap eight and began to get larger in Hardy's mirrors. With the cloudy and cooler conditions making the outside lane work better. Jorgenson powered past Hardy to be the leader of the pack on lap twelve. Yellow returned shortly after that when Elliot Hawkins and Landon Lockington made contact in turn three that ended the race early for our Hobby Stock points leader. Andy Moore loomed large on the outside of Jorgenson on the restart, but Jorgenson stood his ground and opened up a few car lengths advantage on the inaugural HobbyFest champion. As the crossed flags were displayed, Moore would be under the gun for second as Raley went toe-to-toe with the multi-time Hobby Stock champ here at Tomah Sparta. A massive gaggle of cars battled over fourth through eleventh positions as the top three opened up some serious daylight. Jesse Fischer was the first to break out of that pack to settle into fourth with ten laps left to run. Jorgenson began to catch the tail end of the field with six laps remaining, but he was making quick work of slower traffic as he got smaller in Moore's windshield. Fischer used the outside groove to surge past Raley to take the last podium spot in third with four laps to go. Jorgenson was the class of the field as he became the second driver outside of Wisconsin to win HobbyFest, and also locked up the Hobby Stock V8 Border Battle championship.

Shawn Grabinger led the first five laps of the Godfather 30 main event for the Midwest Dash Series. Anna Price-Malouf was working well on the outside as she began to close in on Grabinger. After battling side-by-side for a few laps, Price-Malouf surges into the lead on lap six. Justin Schelitzche started towards the back of the field, but moved all the way up to second and began to apply pressure to Price-Malouf for the lead. Schelitzche got underneath Price-Malouf to take over the number one spot on lap 11. As the halfway point of the race was approaching, Grabinger and Jacob Iverson fell by the wayside due to mechanical issues. Last year Mark Dewey lost an engine during practice, but he was quickly eating up positions and the massive gap Schelitzche held over him. Dewey would be on Schelitzche's rear bumper by lap 18 before he charged into the lead a lap later. Dewey easily began to pull away from Schelitzche and claimed a very impressive feature victory at Tomah Sparta.

Devin Schmidt powered past Jesse Vian to lead the early going of the Sportsmen feature. Charles Vian, Jr. would surge ahead of Jesse to take over second on lap three. By lap six Schmidt had his mirrors and hands full with fighting off the soon-to-be champion. Vian, Jr. tried several times to find a way around the Sportsmen veteran, but was not able to get that opening to take over first place. The battle for first was very intense and entertaining as Vian, Jr. continued to look for that golden opportunity to take the number one spot. This battle went all the way to the finish line, but Vian, Jr. made a questionable decision when he got under Schmidt in turn three and turned him in turn four. Track officials did not like that move and awarded Schmidt the victory. Despite being put last in the final running order, Vian, Jr. wrapped up both the season championship for the Sportsmen and secured the inaugural V8 Border Battle title.

Jacob Iverson surged ahead of Brandon Thorson to lead the opening circuit of the Hornet feature. Ashtin Quinnell and Landon Peterson made contact with each other that sent Peterson for a spin and backed into one of the big tires in turn one on lap two. Iverson wasted little time on the restart to remain in command of the race. Brandon Olson shot past Thorson to move into second on lap three. After starting mid-pack in the field, Tristan Finnigan picked off drivers one by one before wrestling third away from Thorson on lap five. Finnigan would get alongside of Olson and they battled hard for the runner-up spot while Iverson began to open up his lead on them. Finnigan got a good run out of turn four to move ahead of Olson for second on lap nine. Just past halfway, the racing action slowed up when Colten Pennel spun in his own fluids in turn two. Upon further inspection, Finnigan was leaking fluids and was sent to the infield. Finnigan shot past Iverson on the restart to take charge of the race down the back straight. It was a long, rough day for Landon Peterson when something broke on his car and ended his day on lap 12. Olson tried to dive low on Bush, Jr., but the two made contact coming out turn two that sent Bush, Jr. spinning down the back straight with four laps remaining. Olson tapped out in front of officials, which gave Bush, Jr. his second place spot back. Finnigan drove away from Bush, Jr. and the field on the final restart to claim the victory.

The Sixer feature got off to a rough start when Christopher Neal turned Izayah Hughes in turn four. Take two went better as Russell Allen charged past Hughes to take the top position. Soon Allen would have his hands full with both Andrew Moore and Matt Moore. Andrew used the outside lane to his advantage as he shot past Allen to move into the lead on lap three. Matt took over second on lap four and tried to stay in close contact with Andrew for the lead. It was another thrilling nail biting battle for first place as the Moore family fight got more exciting as the laps counted down. Andrew and Matt made contact down the back straight that sent Andrew into the spin cycle while Matt took over the race lead. Monty Odegard battled the Moores in his heat race, and that continued in the feature as he started to challenge Matt for the lead using the outside lane. After suffering a bent right front wheel during practice, Moore took his car back to the shop to get it fixed and returned to the track. It was as if that incident never happened as Moore powered away from Odegard to make another trip to Victory Lane.

Before the kids head off to school for another year of reading, writing and arithmetic, they and the rest of us can enjoy one last Friday night of racing during Back to School NIght on Friday, August 29. The highlight of the evening will be the third and final round of the Modified Mayhem Showdown. Will round two winner Larry DeVito finally claim his first points championship at Tomah Sparta, or will a new face take the third round and spoil DeVito’s party? The Great North Legends, INEX Bandoleros and Hippos will be in action, plus the High School Racing Association will run double features to close out their season and decide their season champion for 2025. Gates open at 5:30, the battle to be the best in group qualifying starts at 6 and the ‘on the edge’ pavement pounding racing takes the green at 7.
