Hannagan, Bowersock and Anderson Capture Memorial Cup Features

(5/23/14) – The Memorial Day Holiday weekend has been one of racing’s most traditional for both competitors and fans. The unofficial start of summer serves as a milepost for the young racing season. On this night it was a collection of veterans that marked the moment by adding to their career accomplishments with impressive performances in capturing Memorial Cup honors.
Randy Hannagan, Jerry Bowersock and Tony Anderson have all been in the winner’s circle previously at Limaland Motorsports Park, and by winning this early in the new season, each of these veterans must be considered genuine contenders for the duration of the 2014 campaign.

The 20-lap Reineke Modifieds feature had former winners in each of the first six starting positions. Pole starter Jerry Bowersock swapped the lead with fellow front row starter Tommy Beezley through the opening laps as they engaged in an entertaining side-by-side encounter. Mechanical problems forced out Beezley on lap number seven, while Bowersock was now facing the task of holding off track champion Todd Sherman for more than half of the event following a restart on lap number eight.

Bowersock had a couple of close brushes with losing the race lead, including just a few feet before the white flag come out. An accident elsewhere on the track brought out a yellow flag and saved the lead for another white flag, this time the actual final lap of the race. Todd Sherman had been noticeably working the inside of Bowersock and nearly made it stick, especially coming off of turn four and heading down the front straight. The seasoned veteran Bowersock maintained his composure and went on to record the sixth win of his Limaland Motorsports Park career and first of this season.

“I thought we were good enough last time out here” said the victorious Bowersock. “Things just didn’t go our way late, but tonight I was fortunate to hold off a great racer like Todd (Sherman) and get our first one of the year.”

The much anticipated showdown between the NRA Sprint Invaders and the Sprints On Dirt competitors didn’t materialize as some observers might have expected. At the front of the field for the 25-lap feature, season opening winner J.R. Stewart and powerhouse Randy Hannagan were only slowed down by caution periods that they had little or nothing to do with.

Hannagan stormed to the front and drove his red colored #22H Yoakam Motorsports car with confidence in the track surface as he appeared to be almost full throttle riding just below the cushion on the high-banked ¼ mile oval. A flurry of yellow flags allowed Stewart to maintain the runner-up position, although he was never able to wrestle the lead away from Hannagan.

A spectacular crash on the front straight by Chase Ridenour near the mid-point of the race simply slowed the inevitable for Randy Hannagan. He ultimately gave up very little ground to Stewart and rolled to his first win of the new season. It was also the 15th for Hannagan in his career at the track, with most of those coming in the past three seasons.

“Everything was good for us tonight,” stated the California sprint car ace. “Our starting position was fortunate and the car was working well. Winning is important for us after the success we’ve had here and to be able to win on this weekend (Memorial Day) is always special.”

The 15-lap Budweiser Thunderstocks field was packed with proven competitors at the front of the field from the start of the race. Jordan Conover found himself almost immediately fighting off challenges from track champion Tony Anderson and former winners Shawn Valenti and Tim Cole.

The pressure from Anderson proved too much for Conover as he surrendered the lead position on lap number four. Anderson executed a perfect pass near the bottom of the racing surface in getting around Conover. Tony Anderson won the track title last season but was unable to win a feature during his championship season. This time he finished the deal while maintaining the lead through the duration of the event. In the meantime Conover and Shawn Valenti produced a spirited battle for second place.

Anderson was thrilled in winning after last season’s drought. “When the track is heavy there are three or four cars out here faster than me, but when it’s dry and slick we definitely are one of the main players in this division,” said Anderson. “My crew did a last second shock change that really helped the car out and allowed me to make the bottom side work.” It was the 31st career win for Tony Anderson in the stock car division. He is also an eight-time season point’s champion at the track.

Limaland Motorsports Park returns to action on Friday, May 30, for the 15th Annual Steve Brown Memorial featuring the Budweiser Thunderstocks. The Elwer Fence Sprints and Reineke Modifieds will also battle on the famed ¼ mile oval. Gates open at 5:00 p.m. with hot laps beginning at 6:30 p.m. Racing begins promptly at 7:30 p.m.
