Running Five Features in Three Days Blumer Ends Weekend on Another High Note

While starting on the pole certainly helped with the solid 5th place run at Beaver Dam in the midget on Saturday night, Sunday at Angell Park Speedway was still a really positive day for Eric Blumer.

After a poor qualifying run where he was 19th of the 23 that took times, some luck finally went his way. While every car would make the feature, a good finish in a heat was important as always because the top five cars earn points and the top two would make their way into the special Dash for Dean.

The Dash was put on by the family of Dean Billings. The late Badger charger was a fan favorite who was critically injured at Angell Park 25 years prior and passed away in 2024.

In Blumer’s heat he was running fourth with two laps to go when the red came out as the second place car tagged the wall and flipped. Then as they were lining up the new second place car had issues and was towed to the pit area. Blumer inherited second. On the restart Parker Jones continued his dominance and took the win. Blume held off current MARA point leader Jace Sparks at the line to grab the coveted ticket to The Dash for Dean.

DASH FOR DEAN

As luck would have it, the dash was set up just like the Trophy Dash in the days of old. The fastest in qualifying were in the back so Blumer had the pole for the six car, six lap, dash. He led most if not all of lap-one. Jones, who started last, caught him right at the start/finish line. Jones sailed to the win. Blumer held off Daniel Robinson for several laps but the veteran got him in the end and Blumer ended up third. For his effort Blumer earned only his third Badger banner (a form of trophy or memento) and a nice check thanks to the Billings family.

Blumer, who was too young to have seen Billings run, but it was still special to make the race as he has had the support of Dean’s daughter Stacy Billing-Hughes and her husband Mike Hughes for many years. He also has an association through his employer, Legends Direct as he supplies parts to Bryan Billings, the son of Dean. Bryan’s daughter Emily Billings is a star in the Bandolaro ranks that Legends Direct services.

THE FEATURE

Starting 14th in the Lyco Manufacturing A-Main, Blumer picked off four cars by the time the first circuit was complete. He spent the remainder of the event going side by side with former feature winner Luke Wackerlin. Wackerlin liked the high side while Blumer was set up for the bottom. In the end Wackerlin won the battle and Blumer had his third, ninth place run of the season at Angell Park. In his three years of midget racing ninth is the best he’s finished at his hometown track.

UP NEXT

This Saturday, August 2, the Badger Midgets will invade Wisconsin’s Northwoods and Eagle River Speedway. There are a lot of teams and fans planning on making a weekend of it. Last year Blumer and the rest of Badger made the tow only to have a shower ruin the evening before it got started. Teams are looking forward to hitting this little gem of a track.

One big factor in going to this race for the Blumer team was lodging. We thank long-time supporter Kent Orfan for hosting us this weekend.
